CALL FOR PAPERS SOFT METHODS IN MACHINE LEARNING AND DATA MINING Special Session to be held as part of 5th International Conference on Soft Methods in Probability and Statistics (SMPS 2010) September 28 - October 1, 2010 Oviedo and Mieres (Asturias), Spain http://www.cost-ic0702.org/smps2010/ ====================================================================== The research fields of machine learning and data mining have received a great deal of attention in recent years and, beyond doubt, have established themselves as main cornerstones of intelligent systems design. Learning and extracting patterns from data is inseparably connected with various types of uncertainty, including randomness, vagueness, incompleteness, inconsistency and imprecision, which may concern both the input and output of a learning method as well as its internal representations of models or patterns. Probabiliy theory is an established methodology for handling uncertainty in a proper way, and is widely used in machine learning and data mining. Yet, it is becoming more and more apparent and accepted among researchers that probability does not capture all relevant forms of uncertainty equally well, and that other mathematical tools currently developed under the umbrella term "soft computing", notably fuzzy sets and related uncertainty formalisms, can complement classical probability in a reasonable way. This special session, which is supported by the EUSFLAT working group on Learning and Data Mining and the IEEE CIS Task Force on Machine Learning, will focus on recent advances in the use of soft computing methods in machine learning and data mining. The organizers especially welcome contributions on the use of formal frameworks for reasoning under uncertainty such as, e.g., probabilistic and Bayesian methods, fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, possibility theory, evidence theory, rough set theory, and information theory, to machine learning and data mining, including but not limited to data preprocessing, model induction (e.g., classification, regression), pattern mining and analysis (e.g., association rules, subgroup mining, clustering, novelty detection), formal concept analysis, handling of incomplete and heterogeneous data, analysis of non-stationary data and mining data streams, interactive and online data mining, mining at multiple levels of abstraction, incorporation of background knowledge, and visualization and presentation of data mining results. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ----------------------- The platform for paper submission and registration will be open from February 1, 2010. Full papers of 5-8 pages written in English and fulfilling the instructions for authors (see Call For Papers menu in the web page) should be submitted no later than March 1, 2010 (tentative), camera-ready versions of the accepted papers no later than May 16, 2010 (tentative). The conference proceedings will be published as an edited volume of the series Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing (Springer-Verlag) - up to now both the whole book and the individual papers are recognized by the ISI web of science.
