Call For Papers

ICWS 2012 Call for Papers
Sponsored by the Technical Committee on Services Computing (TC-SVC), IEEE Computer Society
The 19th IEEE International Conference on Web Services (ICWS 2012)
Theme: Data-Centric Web-Based Services
Celebrate the Merger between ICWS & ECOWS in 2012!

ICWS 2012 organizing committee invites you to participate in the nineteenth edition of ICWS, to be held on June 24-29, 2012 in Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort and Spa, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

The IEEE International Conference on Web Services (ICWS) has been a prime international forum for both researchers and industry practitioners to exchange the latest fundamental advances in the state of the art and practice of Web-based services, identify emerging research topics, and define the future of Web-based services. The Proceedings of ICWS is SCI & EI indexed. In 2012, we will celebrate the merger between ICWS and European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS) as the nineteenth version of gathering, to strive to advance the largest international professional forum on Web-based services.

The IEEE 2012 World Congress on Services (SERVICES 2012) is the biggest international forum that explores the science and technology of Services Computing, which was formally promoted by IEEE Computer Society since 2003. Under the umbrella of SERVICES 2012, ICWS 2012 will co-locate with the following service-oriented sister conferences: the 5th IEEE 2012 International Conference on Cloud Computing (CLOUD 2012), the 9th IEEE 2012 International Conference on Services Computing (SCC 2012), the 1st IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services (MS 2012), and the 1st IEEE International Conference on Services Economics(SE 2012). The five co-located theme topic conferences will all center around "services," while each focusing on exploring different themes (web-based services, cloud-based services, services innovation lifecycle, mobile services, and services economics).

From technology foundation perspective, Services Computing has become the default discipline in the modern services industry. As a major implementation technology for modernizing services industry, Web services are Internet-based programmable application components published using standard interface description languages and universally available via uniform communication protocols. In its nineteenth version, the program of ICWS 2012 will continue to feature research papers with a wide range of topics, focusing on various aspects of data-centric web-based services. Some of the topics include Web services specifications and enhancements, Web services discovery and integration, Web services QoS (e.g., security, performance, reliability, fault tolerance, etc.), Web services standards and formalizations, Web services modeling, Web services engineering, Web services testing, Web services-based applications and solutions, Web services realizations, semantics in Web services, Web services supporting Cloud Computing, Web services lifecycle management, and all aspects of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) infrastructure and middleware.

The technical program of ICWS 2012 will include a research track, an application and experience track, an industry track, and a work-in-progress track. The ICWS 2012 tracks seeks original, UNPUBLISHED research papers reporting substantive new work in various aspects of Web services. Research track papers MUST clearly indicate their contributions to the field of Web-based services and properly cite related work in the field, such as those published in the proceedings of ICWS, SCC, CLOUD, SERVICES, APSCC, ECOWS, and related journals including TSC, JWSR, and IJBPIM.
All topics relevant to Web services are of interest, but the conference program committee particularly encourages submissions related to the following aspects of Web services divided in three categories:

Foundations of Web Services

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Evolutions
Models, methodologies, and tools (including analysis, design, modeling, and composition)
Publishing, discovery, and selection (including in mobile settings)
Validation and testing (including risk assessment and tracking)
Management and governance (including monitoring, QoS, privacy, trust)
Formal methods (including modeling and specification, data and process semantics, type systems, security, QoS, and other properties)
Standards and implementation and deployment technologies

Internet-based Services

Web 2.0 and Web X.0 concepts in Web services settings
Software As A Service (SaaS)
Cloud Computing for Internet services delivery
Technologies for building and operating massive data centers (including middleware)

Web Services Applications beyond Web

Applications (including mobile, scientific, Grid and utility, autonomic, and embedded computing)
Business process management (including business protocols, business intelligence, service level agreements, and business licensing models)

All submitted manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 program committee members. Accepted and presented papers from all ICWS tracks will appear in the conference proceedings (EI indexed) published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. Extended versions of selected research track papers will be invited for potential publication in the IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC), International Journal of Web Services Research (JWSR), and International Journal of Business Process Integration and Management (IJBPIM). Both TSC and JWSR are indexed by SCI and EI [Link]. According to Thomson Scientific, JWSR is listed in the 2008 Journal Citation Report with an Impact Factor of 1.200. The journal ranks #47 of 99 in the Computer Science, Information Systems and ranks #37 of 86 in Computer Science, Software Engineering.

Submitted research & industry track manuscripts will be limited to 8 (IEEE Proceedings style) pages and REQUIRED to be formatted using the IEEE Proceedings template. Submitted Work-in-Progress track manuscripts will be limited to 2 (IEEE Proceedings style) pages. Unformatted papers and papers beyond the page limit will not be reviewed. Electronic submission of manuscripts (in PDF or Word format) is required. Detailed instructions for electronic paper preparation and submission, panel proposals, tutorial proposals, workshop proposals, and review process can be found at http://conferences.computer.org/icws/2012/.

At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register to the conference and present the paper. One Best Paper award and one Best Student Paper award will be granted at ICWS 2012. The first author of the best student paper must be a full-time student.

Application & Experience Track will NOT accept direct submission. Authors should submit Application & Experience Track papers to ICWS 2012 Conference Management System for Research Track, following the instructions for electronic paper preparation and submission of the Research Track. If at least one co-author comes from industry AND your paper is addressing a practical issue in industry, you can consider to submit it to ICWS 2012 Industry Track. Manuscripts submitted to the Research Track focusing on application or solution descriptions may be recommended to the Application and Experience Track for further consideration if the session slots are available.

Review Policy

IEEE Policy and professional ethics require that referees treat the contents of papers under review as privileged information not to be disclosed to others before publication. It is expected that no one with access to a paper under review will make any inappropriate use of the special knowledge, which that access provides. Contents of abstracts submitted to conference program committees should be regarded as privileged as well, and handled in the same manner. The Conference Publications Chair shall ensure that referees adhere to this practice.

Organizers of IEEE conferences are expected to provide an appropriate forum for the oral presentation and discussion of all accepted papers. An author, in offering a paper for presentation at an IEEE conference, or accepting an invitation to present a paper, is expected to be present at the meeting to deliver the paper. In the event that circumstances unknown at the time of submission of a paper preclude its presentation by an author, the program chair should be informed on time, and appropriate substitute arrangements should be made. In some cases it may help reduce no-shows for the Conference to require advance registration together with the submission of the final manuscript.
