SCOPE
The SSDBM international conference brings together scientific domain experts, database researchers, practitioners, and developers for the presentation and exchange of current research results on concepts, tools, and techniques for scientific and statistical database applications. The 25th SSDBM will provide a forum for original research contributions and practical system design, implementation and evaluation. The rich program of the research track will be supplemented with invited talks, panel sessions, case-study papers, and illustrated demonstrations of research prototypes and industrial systems. SSDBM 2013 will continue the tradition of past SSDBM meetings in providing a stimulating environment to encourage discussion, fellowship and exchange of ideas in all aspects of research related to scientific and statistical database management. TOPICS OF INTEREST Topics of particular interest include (but are not limited to): - Modeling and representation of data, metadata, ontologies, and processes, e.g., array-based data models - Integration and exchange of data, including the federation and management of institutional data repositories - Design, implementation, optimization of scientific workflows - Cyberinfrastructure for scientific computing and eScience - Data-intensive and cloud computing - System architectures in support of scientific and statistical data management and analysis, e.g., multi-core, GPUs - Querying of scientific data, including spatial, temporal, spatio-temporal, and streaming data - Annotation and provenance of data - Mining and analysis of large-scale datasets - Security and privacy - Visualization and exploration - Data support, case studies, and applications - particularly for grand challenge science questions, e.g., sustainability, global climate change IMPORTANT DATES Research paper abstracts due February 12 Research, case-study, and demo papers due February 19 Notification April 12 Camera-ready papers due May 3 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES We solicit papers describing original work relevant to the management of scientific and statistical data and not published or under review elsewhere. SSDBM submissions can be of four kinds: * Research papers (long and short): We solicit both full papers and short papers (formatting details will be announced shortly). The former will tend to be descriptions of complete technical work, while the latter will tend to be descriptions of interesting, innovative ideas, which nevertheless require more work to mature. General, vision papers should also be submitted as short papers. Full papers will be given a presentation slot in the conference, while short papers will be presented in the form of posters. All papers, regardless of size, will be given an entry in the conference proceedings. * Case-studies: We solicit papers (formatting details will be announced shortly), which describe applications of existing technologies to interesting science problems, including a description of the encountered challenges, how they were overcome, and the lessons learned. All papers on this track will be given an entry in the conference proceedings and a presentation slot, though the presentation slot duration may be shorter than for regular research papers. * Demonstration papers: We solicit demonstration submissions (formatting will be announced shortly) which should provide the motivation for the demonstrated concepts, the information about the technology and the system to be demonstrated (including a system description, functionality and figures when applicable), and should state the significance of the contribution. Selection criteria for the demonstration proposals evaluation include: the novelty, the technical advances and challenges, and the overall practical attractiveness of the demonstrated system. Demonstration papers will also be given an entry in the conference proceedings.
