The Distance Transform is one of the cornerstones of geometric image processing. It can be used almost in any problem that requires integrating shape notions with a rich variety of tasks, e.g., exerting shape influence to lower level visual processing, robot path planning, or image inpainting. The Eikonal Equation is the standard equation governing the Distance Transform. Nevertheless, in recent years, regularized variants governed by elliptic and parabolic PDEs are becoming more and more commonplace. These new variants are better at capturing higher order interactions within the transformed domain, and suggest alternative mechanisms of integrating layers of visual processing. On the computational side, compared to the standard Distance Transform formulated via the Eikonal Equation, solving these regularized alternatives is simpler, and typically leads to linear models.

We invite prospective authors to submit original and unpublished research to this special issue. All submissions are expected to exhibit high novelty while staying relevant to the spirit of the special issue and demonstrate the merits of the proposed approaches in shape based image analysis applications.

We welcome papers within, but not restricted to, the following topics:
- Novel Shape Methodologies around Diffusion and Wave Equations
- Novel concepts for distance for shape related tasks
- Novel priors for shape related tasks
- Regularized Distance-Like Fields: Poisson, Screened Poisson, and Schrodinger PDE models; Variational Methods, L_p Distances; Discrete models; Stochastic models and random walks
- Geodesic Heat Equations on surfaces
- Theoretical connections between elliptic PDE formulations and Hamilton-Jacobi
- Connections to Reaction-Diffusion models
- Connections to Mathematical Morphology
- Applications of Regularized Distance Fields in Shape Guided Image Processing
- Applications in Computer Graphics and Vision
- Computing schemes and improved numeric
