With the advances in the capabilities of mobile devices and high-bandwidth networks, the availability of distributed cloud virtual resources, and the anticipated Internet of Things, the way applications can be distributed on computing nodes is dramatically evolving. New generations of middleware emerge to address these new target environments. They enable the development of new kind of services and applications, which have an impact on almost all our daily activities, including educational, social and business.
Middleware is software that resides between applications and the underlying architecture and platforms. Middleware has been a key element to facilitate application distribution from early basic client/server distribution to peer-to-peer distribution. New middleware paradigms are required for Internet distributed systems where the architecture may be unknown at design time, as it could be distributed among mobile devices, sensors and computers in the cloud.

The special issue will provide particular focus on middleware abstractions and paradigms to address these new target environments. Those abstractions and paradigms should facilitate the design and distribution of new applications in multiple domains such as mobile marketing, social networks, smart cities, health care, and business processes. The next generation of Middleware should provide new abstractions for better programmability, performance, scalability and security, as well as for the integration of essential features such as elasticity and green awareness.
The topics of interests include but are not limited to the following:
* Middleware for the Internet of Things on the cloud
* Middleware for mobile computing on the cloud
* Personal cloud, ad hoc cloud, distributed cloud computing and service models
* Middleware paradigms and patterns for new Internet environments
* Middleware and software engineering approaches
* Middleware for heterogeneous and multiscale infrastructure
* Middleware and multiscale deployment
* Middleware for industrial environment
* Middleware and application level interoperability
* Extrafunctional properties
- Scalability, elasticity
- Reliability
- Dynamic configuration and self- or autonomic- management
- Energy- and power-awareness
- Virtualization, auto-scaling, provisioning, and scheduling
- Privacy and security management
- Context-awareness and location awareness
- Resource and service management, provision, and migration
