Some natural accidents of the island are: bays (San Andrés, Haynes, Sound, Sprat y Southwest Cove), peaks (North, South, Old y Evans) and cays (Cotton Cay, Rocky Cay, Rose Cay, Haynes Cay, Johnny Cay). The region itself is a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a privileged diving destination due to its warm Caribbean waters, stunning coral reef formations and vibrant tropical fish. The Caribbean seat of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia is located in the San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina archipelago, fulfilling its main missions of forming citizens as professionals, deepening their knowledge through the offer of postgraduate courses in the area of Marine Biology and strengthening the scientific capacity of the region. The research and extension topics are developed at the Institute of Caribbean Studies, the Botanical Garden and CECIMAR.
