Guest Editors:
Barbara Rita Barricelli (Human Factors and Technology Laboratory, Department of Computer Science, Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy) and Priya Davda (The Bayswater Institute, United Kingdom)

Description:
Technologies for telehealth, telecare and telemedicine have existed for over forty years and have often been presented as heralding a new era of healthcare, one in which patients would not need to travel to see specialists, people could be kept safe in their own homes and there would be less need for expensive in-hospital treatment. Such societal changes would especially regard the improvement the quality of life of people affected by chronic diseases that could benefit by the introduction of mobile technology as pervasive tools for continuous monitoring of health status at a distance by health practitioners and relatives.
Direct involvement of patients and health professionals (medical doctors, nurses, and health care assistants) in the co-design process of pervasive health technologies poses sociotechnical design challenges because of the integration of the contribution of different expertise – different stakeholders with diverse roles in the same domain of application and also diverse degrees of IT literacy.
This double issue of the International Journal of Sociotechnology and Knowledge Development welcomes papers which present research works aimed at understanding the processes, forces and challenges of the implementation of pervasive healthcare projects with a sociotechnical approach.

- Mobile health: technologies, methodologies, case studies
