Call For Papers

Call for papers: ‘Current Views on Social Class, Status, and Mobility’, special issue of International Review of Social Research, Volume 4, Issue 3, October, 2014.

Guest editors: Duane F. Alwin (McCourtney Professor in Sociology and Demography, Pennsylvania State University) and Paula A. Tufiș (Department of Sociology, University of Bucharest)

International Review of Social Research (www.irsr.eu) is inviting submission of papers for a special issue dedicated to social stratification and mobility research.

Both recent and past scholarship have sometimes questioned the relevance of social class (at least in some of its operationalizations) for individuals’ lives and identities and for social scientists’ research approaches (using class or related measures of social position) to explaining other outcomes of interest. At the same time, in a context characterized by prevailing, or even rising inequalities in life opportunities and outcomes, it is important to understand how various measures of social position operate and to what degree they constitute substantively meaningful predictors of various outcomes of interests for social scientists and for societies at large. With this special issue of our journal, we hope to bring together a collection of articles that will contribute to the ongoing debates on these topics.

We are particularly interested in research papers exploring the relevance of social class, social status, and social mobility in explaining attitudes, beliefs, and values in present-day societies. We also welcome papers on related topics, such as income inequality, labor market processes, and educational stratification. We encourage both submissions that focus on more methodological aspects in social stratification research and submissions with a substantive theoretical focus.

Papers can be submitted by e-mail at: editor@irsr.eu. Please include “Submission for Current Views on Social Class Special Issue” in the subject field of your e-mail. Authors are kindly asked to consult and adhere to the full author guidelines for submission available at: http://irsr.eu/instructions.html. The deadline for submissions is June 1st, 2014. The special issue is scheduled to be published in October 2014. International Review of Social Research is indexed in multiple databases, including EBSCO and CEEOL (more details available at http://www.irsr.eu/indexing.html).
