Call For Papers

Fast progress in portable consumer devices has catalyzed various mobile applications and services to become an integral part of everyday life. Nevertheless, despite the vast technical advances, mobile devices still face a number of challenges in resource provisioning such as storage, battery life, bandwidth, mobility, and security, all of which significantly impact the Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) of the end-users. Hence, mobile devices still fall short to execute many rich media and data analysis applications that require heavy computation, and often also have real-time constraints. A number of these applications also fall within the area of “Urgent Computing” - which refers to providing high-priority access to computational and data resources to support emergency computations, such as severe weather prediction during matters of immediate concern - such as hurricanes, flooding, medical emergencies. Immediate access to computational jobs in critical emergencies must be given, and time cannot be wasted in job queues of high-end computational resources.

One solution to overcome these resource limitations is mobile cloud computing (MCC), which combines the Cloud computing paradigm and mobile networks. MCC can lead to extended battery life due to pervasive storage and the offloading of computationally expensive tasks. Nevertheless, improving the energy efficiency of such MCC-based distributed systems is a key challenge. In this special issue, we seek original work focused on addressing new research, development challenges, and efficient/sustainable solutions in green mobile cloud computing. Specific topics include, but not limited to, the following:

Green MCC systems
Green networks for MCC systems
Green MCC models, infrastructures, and approaches
Green solutions for the core network
Energy efficiency in MCC
Fog Computing and mobility
Integration of Mobile Cloud Computing and Internet of Things
Quality of Service on green mobile clouds and applications
Energy aware middleware, framework for MCC
Modeling and Performance Evaluation in MCC systems
Energy saving solutions and tradeoffs
Prediction of energy consumption in MCC systems
Sustainable solutions in large-scale MCC systems
Energy efficiency of storage solutions in MCC systems
Energy-aware design and programming models in MCC systems
Energy-efficient hardware and software architectures for MCC systems
Energy-efficient resource management tools
Monitoring and evaluation tools for energy in MCC systems
Experimental results, benchmarks & testbeds for green MCC systems

Submission Details
General information for submitting papers to SUSCOM can be found at http://ees.elsevier.com/suscom/ (please, note the “Guide for Authors” link). Submissions to this Special Issue (SI) should be made using Elsevier’s editorial system at the journal website (http://ees.elsevier.com/suscom/, under the “submit paper” link). Please, make sure to select the “SI: Green MCC” option for the type of the paper during the submission process. All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication. A submission based on one or more papers that appeared elsewhere has to comprise major value-added extensions over what appeared previously (at least 30% new material). Authors are requested to attach to the submitted paper their relevant, previously published articles and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. All submitted papers will be peer reviewed using the normal standards of SUSCOM. By submitting a paper to this issue, the authors agree to referee one paper (if asked) within the time frame of the SI.
