Femtocell Communications: Business Opportunities and Deployment Challenges

Chaudhari, International Institute of Information Technology (I2IT), Pune, India Call for Chapters: Proposals Submission Deadline: July 15, 2010 Full Chapters Due: October 1, 2010 Introduction Femtocell is a new, emerging technology for cellular wireless networks, which has rapidly attracted cellular industry through two past years. The advantage of femtocell to mobile operators is to reduce the network deployment cost and increase coverage in indoor environment. Femtocell is also considered a possible path to the fixed–mobile convergence (FMC) goal. Femtocell access points (FAP), or home base stations (HBS), are base stations designed for use in the user premises (home or small business). It serves small number of users (i.e. 4 users) and covers about 30 square meters, similar to existing WiFi access points. The uniqueness of femtocell in contrast to micro and macrocellular is that it connects to a cellular network through a broadband network i.e. xDSL. A femtocell improves signal quality in indoor environments and provides high-speed wireless access mobile-Internet users. However, femtocell introduces new challenges to the mobile operators (MOs) in terms of the handoff between femto and macrocells, interference management, localization and synchronization, security and network management, not to mention radio resources management (RRM) between femto and macrocellular systems and common radio resource management (CRRM). The main two deployment challenges that face femtocell forums are the use cases (user experience) and interference from/to macrocell and other femtocells. Objective of the Book This book is intended to give the audience extensive technical overview and look at how the femtocell can be deployed to bring new applications, services and experiences to users. One of the promising business opportunities is closed subscriber group (CSG) Internet services and bridges the gab between fixed and mobile applications. Target Audience The book is targeting the engineers and marketing staff in telecom and cellular operators, where it will help them to have deep technical background about this revolutionary technology to plan for their network and take decisions for future trends. The book also target undergraduate (teaching and final year projects) and postgraduate research students, academicians and researchers working in the field of mobile communication and new applications developments. Interested authors are invited to submit chapter proposal (1-3 pages) to femtocellbook@gmail.com describing clearly the topic covered. • The proposal should include the chapter organization, • Contact address of the corresponding author. • Chapter outlines (tentative chapter ToC) • References All submitted chapters will undergo a double-blind peer review. Upon acceptance of chapter proposals, authors will be sent document preparation guidelines. The authors may be requested to modify the contents of the chapters if deemed necessary in order to maintain the consistency of the entire book and to include the most up-to-date information about each topic.
