The Sustainable Design and Manufacturing 2016 (SDM16) conference
will encompass both theoretical and applied research in a series of topic
areas applicable to sustainable design and manufacturing. SDM16 consists
of keynote talks, invited sessions and workshops. It will also provide
excellent opportunities for networking.

The conference proceedings will be published by Springer as book chapters
in a volume of the KES Smart Innovation Systems and Technologies series,
submitted for indexing in Scopus and Thomson-Reuters Conference Proceedings
Citation Index (CPCI) and the Web of Science.

==============
Conference Scope
==============

The conference will focus on these key areas:

Sustainable Design, Innovation and Services

Ecodesign and eco-innovation; closed-loop design; design for environment;
design for social sustainability; sustainable innovation; DfX (for lifecycle) -
manufacturing, assembly, testing, use, recycling, etc; sustainable product
and service modelling; design thinking for sustainability; design innovation
for sustainable city, transportation, water and food security.

Sustainable Manufacturing Processes and Technology

Environmentally conscious manufacturing processes; energy and resource
efficiency and effectiveness in advanced manufacturing processes (e.g.,
RP/additive/layered manufacturing, micro and nanomachining, laser-based
manufacturing); sustainable manufacturing processes; re-manufacturing
processes and techniques; technology for waste recovery.

Sustainable Manufacturing Systems and Enterprises

Product life cycle management; end-of-life strategies; energy management
and efficiency improvement for production systems; predictive maintenance
and service for sustainable manufacturing; sustainable supply chains and
green logistics; sustainable business models; green factory; societal impact
of manufacturing systems; policy aspects of sustainable manufacturing.

Decision Support for Sustainability

Life cycle assessment and costing; intelligent decision support methods and
tools for sustainable manufacturing; value mapping and assessment for
sustainable manufacturing and society; diagnosis and prognostics; virtual
and collaborative environment for sustainability; user behaviour models for
sustainability; system thinking for sustainability.

Invited Sessions And Workshops
===========================

An invited session consists of a presentation session of 6 to 12 or more papers
on a specific conference topic, organised as half or full day mini-conference. We
invite senior scientists who have a special interest in a specific conference topic
to take responsibility for an invited session, gathering papers from a range of
research expertise around the world. If you would like to arrange an Invited Session
please contact Prof. Rossi Setchi at Setchi@cardiff.ac.uk and include:
admin@kesinternational.org as a CC.

Here are the Invited Session approved so far:

IS01: Design for Additive Manufacture
IS02: Sustainability and resilience in agri-food supply chains
IS03: Eco-Design through Systematic Innovation
IS04: Redistributed manufacturing for resilience and sustainability
IS05: UK-China Forum on Innovation for Green Manufacturing

=======
Location
=======

The conference will take place in Chania, on the beautiful island of Crete, Greece.
Chania is one of the most beautiful cities in Greece and thought by many to be the
most picturesque. Chania is a bustling city with both old and modern sections famed
for the Venetian Harbour, the old port, the narrow shopping streets and waterfront
restaurants. The town, built along a stunning harbor with the bluest seas, is like a
museum of cultures that have at one point or another occupied the city, leaving
magnificent traces of their power and glory.
