Call For Papers

Henry Clifton Sorby was a pioneer in the application of microscopy techniques to the study of geological and metallic materials, a past president of the Royal Microscopical Society and a founder of The University of Sheffield. 150 years ago, Sorby was the first to use etching with acid to study the microstructure of iron and steel. Using this technique, he was the first to understand that a small but precise quantity of carbon gave steel its strength. There have been remarkable advances in microscopy since that time and also since the 1963 Sheffield Sorby conference, which reviewed the then state-of-the art in metallography. This conference will review modern techniques to characterise materials and minerals, and show the understanding gained has led to major steps in materials developments.

The abstract deadline for oral and poster contributions is Friday 19th July, 6pm.

Abstracts are welcome which address: “Advances and applications in the microscopy of metals and minerals”

Guidelines for Abstract Submission:
1. Send your abstract as a Microsoft Word document not as a PDF.
2. Ensure that you include within the abstract file the full title of work, all authors and their affiliations
3. You may include colour images and figures
4. Please indicate whether you would prefer an Oral or Poster presentation
5. Your abstract should be approximately 300-500 words in length
6. Please send your abstract(s) to Cecile Fortin at cecile@rms.org.uk

Your abstract submission will be acknowledged and you will be contacted shortly after the deadline date as to the success of your submission.
