The eighth PPIG Work-in-Progress Workshop (PPIG-WIP) will be held in the School of Computing and Mathematics at Keele University on July 8-9 2013. PPIG-WIP is a forum in which researchers at all levels can present and discuss future work, current work, recent results, findings and developments. Experienced researchers and practitioners, as well as doctoral students, are equally invited to participate.

The Psychology of Programming Interest Group (http://www.ppig.org) was established in 1987 in order to bring together people working in a variety of disciplines, to explore common interests in the psychological aspects of programming and/or in computational aspects of psychology and to break down cross-disciplinary barriers. Despite its title, PPIG is interested not only in psychology of programming and software engineering, but also in psychological aspects of related activities. Indeed, a feature of the PPIG workshops has always been their openness to a wide spectrum of concerns.

Topics of interest relate to any aspect of programming and software engineering. Past workshops have involved discussion on issues ranging from the design of programming languages to communication problems in software teams, and from computing education to high-performance professional practice. But this is not an exhaustive list and other topics have been considered at recent meetings including: learning mathematical formalisms, creativity and digital design, understanding websites, and live coding in the laptop music world. Similarly, PPIG entertains a broad spectrum of research approaches, from theoretical perspectives drawing on psychological and social theory to empirical perspectives grounded in real-world experience.

The 2013 Work-in-Progress Workshop is being held in the School of Computing and Mathematics at Keele University. Keele is the UK’s largest integrated campus university. Our central location within the UK means that we are easily accessible from anywhere in the country.

Extended abstracts (maximum of two pages) are to be submitted for review. Following notification of acceptance, authors have the opportunity to submit a full paper (maximum of six pages) if desired.

Although submitted materials need not detail completed research (or even research that has started), the work described should be aiming to produce scientific output of publishable quality. All abstracts accepted for presentation at PPIG-WIP 2013 will appear in the workshop proceedings and be archived on the PPIG website.
