Within the last couple of years the academic discourse in big data and knowledge discovery and data mining (KDDM) capabilities and processes have grown exponentially. This is accompanied by increased interest by practitioners, managers and executives as they attempt to find effective methods to make sense of their growing large volume of data to enable improved strategic decisions. KDDM is viewed as an interdisciplinary field that encompasses artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics and data mining. However, in the context of organizational implementation, this is further augmented by an intersection of project management, strategy and financial management, and other business, legal, privacy, ethical and security considerations. We contend that all these elements are imperative to the maximization of the benefits of KDDM initiatives including increased competitive advantage. However with the difficult or cumbersome nature of the KDDM process, it is important to share strategies that can simplify this process and facilitate empowerment. This becomes even more important in developing and emerging economies that are increasing their KDDM investments in an attempt to leverage capabilities of KDDM to build businesses, governments and the economy. The book is intended for practitioners, academic researchers, including experienced researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, engaged in KDDM activities particularly in less developed and emerging countries. The discourse on the methods, techniques and best practices presented will of particular interests to persons and organizations that are relatively less experienced in conducting KDDM initiatives. It will also showcase how to design and implement these initiatives. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: - Best practices and methodologies in KDDM - KDDM Process models - Privacy and security issues in KDDM projects - Management of KDDM projects (techniques and strategies, Success criteria, Critical success factors) - Economics of data mining - Legal and legislative concerns of big data - Cases in KDDM from developing, emerging & transition economies - Applications and cases of KDDM in businesses and government(Education, Healthcare,Agriculture, Tourism, Criminal Justice Administration, Mining industry, Social media, Environmental Issues, e-Government, SMEs, Financial and insurance sector) - Computer security data mining This book is scheduled to be published by CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group. This publication is anticipated to be released in 2014. |
