Description

Recent development of technologies and applications in wireless and mobile communications are transforming the digital world. Wireless and mobile access has become indispensable for today’s Internet vision and it is likely to continue. Future digital life cannot be conceived without mobile phones and wireless networks. Novel services on the move such as uploading user-generated content, video streaming, in-vehicle infotainment and location based services, are putting pressure on computing algorithms to be more efficient and less resource demanding. Yet, issues like efficient management of mobility, optimization of networking protocols, efficient security algorithms, and power saving, are still open challenges and becoming critical to continue the evolution in mobile computing.

For example, a mobile gadget that is capable of using wireless infrastructure when it is convenient and then seamless switch to take advantage of P2P communication, bypassing costly networks, without cumbersome reconfiguration and no hassle to the user is not yet a reality. Novel network architectures such as human and social networks pose additional challenges to the traditional Internet and its business models. This is a reality, wireless and mobile communications are pushing for new architectures and for a different way of thinking the business.

All these changes have an impact on the algorithms and system design, software engineering, data management and distributed solutions. Many “stable” topics in computer science have the need to be revised or adapted to fit the dynamics and constraints of mobile and wireless computing. SyMoS’09 welcomes submissions, from both researchers and practitioners, related to the latest advances in wireless and mobile computing. These can include network architectures (human networks, mesh, vehicle networks, etc.) protocols (mobility management, routing, etc.) data management, system design, and services and applications (LBS, in-vehicle services, P2P, social networks, etc). Preference will be given to those projects or practices that explore the development of wireless and mobile computing in developing countries and rural areas. In this direction, transition technologies, adaptation of technologies to rural scenarios, or services to explore the penetration of mobile communications in developing countries, are considered.

Paper submission

Authors are invited to submit full papers (maximum 4 pages, IEEE style) to this topic according to the conference schedule. All accepted papers will be published in the IEEE conference proceedings from ENC 2009. Full papers must be submitted electronically, using the conference management tool.
