Call For Papers

Call for Participation: SIGITE/RiIT 2013:
Making Lemonade: IT Education in Resource Constrained Environments Join us in Orlando - October 9-12, 2013 (Conference October 10-12, IT Chairs Meeting October 9)

Caribe Royale Orlando Hotel and Convention Center
Hosted by University of South Florida

The ACM SIGITE Annual Conference on Information Technology Education, co-located with the 2nd Annual Conference on Research in Information Technology, is sponsored and organized by the ACM Special Interest Group on Information Technology Education (SIGITE) and its members. The integrated program will contain keynote lectures, technical paper sessions, panels, posters, “birds of a feather” meetings, workshops and vendor exhibits, all contributing to a forum for sharing and developing ideas about Information Technology research, education, applications, IT industry‐academia relationships and our roles as professionals, educators, and advocates for the effective use of information technology.

Orlando is America’s family vacation destination, with attractions including Disneyworld, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios, along with proximity to ocean beaches, multiple golf courses and other recreation and entertainment venues. This is the slow part of the year for most attractions with short lines and pleasant weather.

The 2013 SIGITE Conference focuses on making lemonade from the lemon grove that is our collective, resource-constrained education enterprise. We seek your insights and experiences related to IT pedagogy, program development and change, industry and community relations, and how you’re making the most of the resources around you. The IT Chairs meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 2:00.

Suggested topics include:

Networking: how has cloud computing affected your program?
Programming: caught up in the language wars; how are you responding?
Web Services: privacy, intellectual property, systems’ compatibility – the issues never end.
Information Management: Big Data is big business; how are you preparing your students?
Human-Computer Interaction: in these days of mobile computing, what does HCI mean?
Capstone Experiences: what’s hot (what’s not)?
Systems Integration: what new tools and techniques are you exposing students to?
Information Assurance & Cyber Security: what roles do industry and government standards play?
Industry Partnerships: how are you building them; what are their outcomes?
Regional and Professional Accreditation: hurdles, pitfalls, and successful methodologies to pass along?
External Funding Opportunities: what, where and how?
International Collaborations: who and why?

The Research in IT conference will focus on definitional questions (what domain knowledge falls within the purview of “IT research”) and examples of those definitions, as demonstrated through research results related to many of the topics above and how they factor into systems integration, application deployment, and infrastructure development.

Conference Operations

Conference Chair is Dave Armitage of USF. Dave and his team are responsible for all local details, so questions about keynote speakers, hotels, excursions and outings, transportation, and area amenities should be directed to him. [ armitage@usf.edu ]

Technical paper co-chairs are Rob Friedman and Ken Baker. They are responsible for paper reviews and the program, along with overseeing best paper selections for both conferences, organizing workshops and poster sessions, and providing registrants with access to the proceedings. [ rsfit@u.washington.edu & KBaker@chmack.com ]

Sponsorship co-chairs are Amber Settle and Terry Steinbach. If you have access to IT organizations with national presence and textbook publishers in our domain, please contact Amber and Terry. [ ASettle@cdm.depaul.edu & tsteinbach@cdm.depaul.edu ]

Would you like to be a reviewer? Please let Rob and Ken know. This year, the ACM Publication Board is allowing accepted papers be downloaded on the Web to SIGITE members and other conference registrants two weeks prior to and two weeks following the conferences. This obviates the need for a CD or paper proceedings, so registrants who request a CD will be charged a fee at registration.

Hotel and conference reservation information will appear on the SIGITE.org website soon.

Timeline of Events:
June 1: Submission deadline for paper, panel and poster proposals.
Submissions: https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/ITERIT2013/Public/SignUp.aspx
July 1: Author notification
August 1: Camera-ready copy for papers, posters and panel sessions, and sponsorship.

We look forward to seeing you in sunny Florida!
