SUBJECT

In the light of intensifying international tensions and the low-carbon transformation of the energy system, the issue of “sustainable energy security” is gaining attention. This includes both supply issues, resources and adequate capacity and also demand issues, such as flexibility of demand and energy efficiency as well as grid issues, such as system stability and service reliability. Especially the Ukrainian-Russian crisis stimulated a debate about a possible supply disruption of Russian gas exports, which would heavily challenge Europe’s gas supply. The usage of European renewable energy sources is seen as one possibility to reduce import dependency, but the fluctuating and uncertain character of most renewables also imposes challenges for a stable energy supply. As Europe’s economy is dependent on continuous energy supply, several questions with regard to sustainable energy security arise: what are the specific challenges in Germany and Europe? Which technologies are able to keep security of supply on the accustomed level? Which role do other policy objectives, such as climate protection, increase of energy efficiency, etc. play? Can the market provide adequate incentives or is more regulation required? Should the issue be addressed on the European, national or regional level?

The 10th Conference on Energy Economics and Technology (“ENERDAY”) addresses challenges with regard to energy systems, markets and policies, with a special focus on sustainable energy security. Strategies for long-term as well as short-term security are of interest. Particular emphasis is put on intensifying the dialogue regarding economic and technical issues and perceptions.

You are cordially invited to submit a contribution and we are looking forward to fruitful discussions. Papers may be theoretical or applied, and may address the following issues:

I. Cross-sectional topics
- Energy policies and strategies
e.g. diversification of energy sources, the role of renewables, fracking in Europe, nuclear power to ensure energy security, etc.
- Market design issues
e.g. adequacy and energy security as public good; regional capacity needs, fluctuating renewable energies, prices, capacity mechanisms, etc.
- Future transmission and distribution grids
e.g. role of interconnectors and an overlaying grid structure on energy security; flow-based market coupling and energy security, etc.
- Energy efficiency
e.g. energy efficiency, self-supply, smart meters and smart demand as instruments to increase energy security, etc.
- Energy, society and industry
e.g. value of energy security, role of energy systems with regard to the competitiveness of industries, etc.

II. Sectoral analyses and case studies
- Electricity sector: sector design, investments, reserve and capacity markets, etc.
- Heating sector: promotion of renewables in the heating sector, efficiency measures, combined heat and power, etc.
- Transport sector: hydrogen, electric mobility, traditional fossil fuels, new mobility concepts etc.
- Natural gas and oil sector: security of supply and European strategies, inner-European markets, etc.
- Sector coupling: convergence of electricity, heat and gas markets (power to gas, power to heat, etc.)
