WORKSHOP FOCUS

The central role of software development to support business needs is a matter of fact. These years, companies must respond to increasingly demanding customers in a globally competitive market regulated by strict delivery times and technologies that grow at an impressive speed. Indeed, services and products largely available the world over, give customers the right to ask for high quality systems and competitive support services that can challenge the competition while costing as little as possible. If small organizations might have the agility for playing this game, life of giant companies in the niche field of mission and safety critical systems is definitely harder. On the one hand, mammoth organization make them barely able to chase technology rush; on the other, software complexity, reliability and dependability constraints clash with low-cost.
To handle such a business pressure, managers are increasingly focusing on process improvement and industry best practices implementation to measure the current level of company performance and establishing improvement priorities: in fact, the only key for successful execution of control over quality is measurement . Hence, this emphasis has had a big and immediate effect: bringing software metrics to the forefront. Software metrics are valuable entities in the entire software life cycle.
They allow software processes assessment, project costs estimation, quality monitoring and benchmarking. Also, they provide a quantitative basis for planning and predicting software development processes, impairing the use of quantitative data to improve product quality and to support strategic decision making. However, the current software engineering practices state that industry generally still lacks due attention and a structured approach to software metrics, thus missing the betterment in quality and dependability they might provide. Although during productions phases data get collected about different aspects of the project, like project planning, requirement specification, development, testing and defects detection, several organizations do not strive enough effort into leveraging these data to gauge and control business development issues, improve their processes and gain productivity. Also, the real benefit that metrics can provide to assess systems reliability, security and dependability in critical scenarios is underestimated too much frequently.

OBJECTIVES

This workshop aims to bring together industrial practioners and researchers to discuss the importance of everyday use of software metrics to support strategic decision and lead company business directions. The aim is to provide forum for networking, exchanging new ideas, fostering innovations, and forging long-term collaborations for addressing the most interesting software metrics use and directions in industry.
It will gather highly-qualified industrial and research participants: bringing practices, experiences and everyday issues the formers, proposing innovation in processes, methodologies and ideas the latter. The technical program of the track will be composed of invited speeches, paper presentations, and open discussions with a strong focus on software engineering practitioners.
