Call For Papers

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

In every aspect of life we are constantly confronted with change and the possibility of innovation. Some changes are small--a client cancels an appointment; some not so small--a proposal is rejected, or a hypothesis fails; and some are large--death, crime, chronic illness. In every case, having good tools to respond quickly and effectively to changing situations and circumstances is essential.

Improvisation, the skill of top musicians, writers, clinicians, scientists, executives and other creatives, can give each of us new ways to respond better to change. In improvisation, we use our existing knowledge and skills to create something new in an unplanned, innovative way. Creative, innovative people from multiple disciplines can teach one another strategies to better utilise our skills of improvisation, skills which lead to enhanced performance in work, life and relationships.

The organising chairs welcome proposals for presentations on any aspect of improvisational activities, and innovation in the use and development of improvisational approaches to problem-solving in any field or profession. Performance and demonstration-based presentations are particularly encouraged. Accepted proposals will be part of a mixed-format event consisting of papers, presentations, workshops and discussion groups. Participants will have the opportunity to become part of the Improvisation and Innovation Research and Development group whose ongoing offline and virtual conferencing and workshop events will provide a platform for further work on participants’ individual projects. The group’s research output is expected to generate publications such as ebooks, journal and webcasts.

Proposals should be emailed simultaneously to the organising chairs by 20 February 2013 with the subject heading labeled, “Improv1 Abstract”. The message should include the presenter’s name, affiliation, email address, title of the presentation and brief description. We acknowledge receipt of submissions within a week so if you do not receive a timely reply, please re-send the proposal.

Organising Chairs:

Patricia Fennell: paf@inter-disciplinary.net
Dr Robert Fisher: improv1@inter-disciplinary.net

Cost
The event will take place at Harris Manchester College, Oxford, where participants may choose from two registration options:

Non-Residential: £310 covers registration, morning/afternoon tea, lunches and wine reception
