Scope:

Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have gained considerable interests in recent decades among the earth and environmental science communities on solving and understanding various complex problems and approaches towards sustainable earth and its environment. In this essence, a book is to be compiled, devoted to putting together a collection of the recent developments and rigorous applications of the AI techniques in Earth and Environmental Sciences. The AI techniques include, but are not limited to: artificial neural network, support vector machine, fuzzy logic, evolutionary computing and genetic programming, decision-making algorithms, supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms, probabilistic computing, immunological computing, hybrid methods, rough sets, chaos theory, wavelet, morphic computing, etc. The scope of interests cover all aspects of earth and environmental science associated topics, such as, but are not limited to, remote sensing, meteorology, atmospheric and oceanic modelling, climate change, environmental engineering and management, catastrophic natural hazards, air and environmental pollution, water quality, etc. By linking the AI techniques with earth and environmental science oriented problems, the book will help to promote synergistic activities among scientists and users working in the related areas, such as data mining, machine learning, computing intelligence, as well as earth and environmental sciences. We assume that the book will be read by people with a common interest in artificial intelligence techniques but from many diverse backgrounds within earth and environmental science fields. Particularly, academics, scientists, environmentalists, meteorologists, computing experts would find the book very useful.

Manuscript Structure:

Note: All the authors are suggested to use unpublished work in the chapter to avoid any copy right issues. If you are using any copy right information, please have a prior permission from the publisher before using that material in the chapter. If not, chapter will be out rightly rejected. Please use unique case studies to support your findings with appropriate background information and recent advancement. Manuscript should be structured as: Title; Running title; Abstract; Keywords; Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results and Discussion; Conclusion; Acknowledgements and References. • Title Page: The title page should include: - The name(s) of the author(s) - A concise and informative title - The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s) - The e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author. Manuscript Title: The title should be oriented to Current Science issues and must be concise and informative.
• Abstract: An abstract of 150 to 300 words that shows the purpose of the study; procedures; findings, its novelty; discussions and the conclusions, should not contain any indeterminate abbreviations or references.
• Keywords: Provide 5 to 7 keywords which can be used for indexing purposes. Keywords should not repeat the words of the manuscript title or contain abbreviations and shall be written in alphabetical order as separated by semicolon.
• Introduction: The Introduction should state the purpose of the investigation and identify clearly the gap of knowledge that will be filled in the Literature review study. Date and location of the research carried out throughout the study must be mentioned at the end of this section.
• Materials and methods: The Materials and Methods section should provide enough information to permit repetition of the experimental work. It should include clear descriptions and explanations of sampling procedures, experimental design, and essential sample characteristics and descriptive statistics, hypothesis tested, exact references to literature describing the tests used in the manuscript, number of data involved in statistical tests, etc.
• Results and Discussion: The Results section should describe the outcome of the study. Data should be presented as concisely as possible - if appropriate in the form of tables or figures, although very large tables should be avoided. The Discussion should be an interpretation of the results and their significance with reference to work by other authors. Please note that the policy of the Journal with respect to units and symbols is that of SI symbols.
• References: Cite references in the text with author name/s and year of publication in parentheses (“Harvard system”):
One author: (Miller 1991) or Miller (1991)
Two authors: (Miller and Smith 1994) or Miller and Smith (1994)
Three authors or more: (Miller et al. 1995) or Miller et al. (1995)
Include a reference list at the end of each chapter so that readers of single chapters of the Book can make full use of the citations. References at the end of the book cannot be linked to citations in the chapters. Please do not include reference lists at the end of a chapter section, at the end of a book part, in a preface or an appendix. Include all works that are cited in the chapter and that have been published (including on the Internet) or accepted for publication. Personal communications and unpublished works should only be mentioned in the text. Do not use footnotes as a substitute for a reference list. Entries in the list must be listed alphabetically except in the numbered system of sequential citation. The rules for alphabetization are: First, all works by the author alone, ordered chronologically by year of publication. Next, all works by the author with a coauthor, ordered alphabetically by coauthor. Finally, all works by the author with several coauthors, ordered chronologically by year of publication. • Tables, Graphs and Figures: Please submit all figures in only TIFF format and tables in editable excel format. Tables should be called out in the text and should have a clear and rational structure and consecutive numerical order. All tables should be numbered. Give enough information in subtitles so that each table is understandable without reference to the text. For each table, please supply a table caption (title) explaining the components of the table. Identify any previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference at the end of the table caption. Tables should be with the captions placed above in limited numbers. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data) and included beneath the table body.
Figures/ illustrations should be in high quality art work, with 300 dpi and separately provided in tiff format. Ensure that figures are clear, labelled, and of a size that can be reproduced legibly in the journal. The manuscript should include a separate list of figures. Each figure should have a concise caption describing accurately in the text file of the manuscript, not in the figure file. Identify previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference citation at the end of the figure caption.

Important Dates:

Final draft due: 31st March 2013
Publication of the book: July/August 2013 (estimated)

Submission guidelines:

Interested authors, who wish to contribute a book chapter, please submit the tentative title/abstracts as well as final chapters by email to Dr. Tanvir Islam, tanvir.islam@bristol.ac.uk. The submitted file should be in MS Word format. All manuscripts will be peer reviewed. The chapter proposals can be sent earlier to the editorial team for informal discussions.

Careful preparation of the manuscripts will help keep production time short and ensure satisfactory appearance of the finished book. Please prepare the manuscript as instructed above.
