Call for Papers
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems
Special Section on
“Wind & Solar Energy: Uncovering and Accommodating their Impacts on Electricity
Markets”
Electricity network and markets were designed based on a long history of dealing with
various forms of dispatchable generation, as well as a predictable electric load pattern, in
a centralized top-down manner. Little uncertainty was involved on both generation and
demand side, hence allowing for a straightforward design of electricity markets
accounting for the necessity of a forward optimal allocation, complemented by a realtime mechanism supporting actual power systems operations. This conception of
electricity markets is obviously challenged today, owing to the ever-increasing
penetration of wind power in power systems. Increasing levels of wind and solar
(photovoltaic) energy with zero marginal cost, significant uncertainty and variability there
is a growing consensus that changes will be required in electricity markets. This special
section in IEEE Transactions on Power Systems will address the core issues and we
seek original papers in the following topics:
• Theoretical and empirical analysis of the impact of wind on electricity markets
• Approaches to market clearing with substantial wind and solar PV
• Incentivizing flexibility through novel market designs
• Ensuring sufficient suitable capacity
• Investment models and impact on investment in new generation capacities
• Interactions between electricity markets and wind and solar PV support schemes
• Incentivizing network development to accommodate increased levels of wind and
solar PV
Prospective authors should send summaries (around 250-300 words) in pdf format to the
editors of this special section:
Mark O'Malley, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland
Voice: +353 1 7161851, email: mark.omalley@ucd.ie
Pierre Pinson, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
Voice: + 45 4525 3428, email: ppin@dtu.dk
Based on these summaries, the editors will invite selected authors to submit full papers
that will be reviewed following the standard IEEE Transactions on Power Systems
procedure through ScholarOne Manuscripts:

The format for full papers is available at
http://www.ieee-pes.org/templates-and-sample-of-pes-technical-papers
Important Dates:
July 31, 2013: Deadline for summary submission
September 30, 2013: Invitations sent to selected authors for submitting full papers
January 31, 2014: Deadline for full paper submission
