Presentation

Weiser's dream of an environment enhanced with a set of invisible computing devices [13] is slowly becoming a reality ([2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12]). While most technological requirements can be fulfilled with the current technology, there are still many open questions regarding how to design, build and deploy this kind of systems. It is a quite remarkable fact that the world of software engineering has been in a sense surprised by the world of electronics in such a way that we now have sensors and multimodal interactors and no rigourous methodology to create context-aware programs. Moreover, existing monitoring systems for networked computerized systems are not obviously able to adapt to these new systems. We can think of a future where humans interact with a seamlessly integrated cloud of processes and a partly invisible set of devices. This future was originally envisioned by Weiser who coined the term Ubiquitous Computing [13]. From then on, many research areas have appeared (such as Context-Awareness [4] and specific object-oriented developments for ambient intelligence and pervasive services [6], some of them aiming at similar targets (Ambient Intelligence [8, 6]). What are suitable system architectures for dynamic multi-device appliances? Which programming languages cope best with the needs? How should we devise our applications in order to adapt to hardware evolution? How can our systems interact with previously unknown sensor networks? How flexible can applications adapt to new situations and what level of anticipation is unavoidable? How should systems be presented to end users with such a variety of computing devices? How shall we monitor the different devices and the global architecture ?

* Monitoring of ambient systems: experiments
* Monitoring of ambient media/systems: works giving solid references to existing monitoring tools and problems of distributed/wireless systems
* Frameworks, middleware and architectures for ambient media/systems
* Approaches to support the evolution of ambient media/ systems
* Software engineering techniques for multimodal interactive systems
* Methodology to create and validate ergonomic criteria for ambient media/systems
* Adaptive user interfaces, context-aware interactive systems
* High-level sensor network management
* Interaction among modules developed independently (e.g. web services)
* Context modeling for context-aware applications
* Discovery, retrieval and orchestration of services in pervasive environments
* Deployment infrastructures and support for ambient systems

Submission Guidelines

Potential attendants are expected to submit either a position paper (2 - 3 pages) or a full paper (up to 10 pages) that presents a formal or experimental approach to the topics of SOMITAS. Papers can either be based on results already achieved or else describe future work or even just wish lists of features that future approaches should provide but are either currently hard to achieve. Submissions should be sent using the ICST Cocus system http://icst.org:8080/cocus/. Unless explicit mention from the authors, a submission implies that the authors give their authorization for publication. Final versions of accepted papers will have to be given to the organizers of the workshop in ACM Conferences format before saturday, 2007 the 15th of december.
