Call For Papers

We are pleased to announce the I International Conference "Anthropology in Morocco: Discourses, encounters and networks", taking place at the Faculty of Letters of the University of the Basque Country (Universidad del País Vasco/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea), Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd November 2013.

The keynote speaker will be Professor Hassan Rachik (Université Hassan II, Casablanca).

Confirmed plenary speakers are Yolanda Aixelà Cabré (Institució Milà i Fontanals-CSIC, Barcelona), Pierre Bonte (Laboratoire d´Anthropologie Sociale, EHESS), Anne-Marie Brisebarre (Laboratoire d´Anthropologie Sociale, EHESS), Katherine E. Hoffman (Northwestern University), Josep Lluís Mateo Dieste (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), and Emilio Spadola (Colgate University).

The conference will host keynote lectures, plenary sessions, and different workshops concerning the anthropology of Morocco. Potential themes for papers could include, but are not limited to, the following axes: ethnicity, identity, and alterity; gender, body, and health; religion; ritual and social practices; food and eating; socio-political movements; and space, place, and material culture.

Submission of abstracts: The organisers welcome 250-500-word (max.) abstracts for paper proposals. We also invite submissions for a separate « fieldwork photography » category. All participants are encouraged to submit one fieldwork photograph.

Early submission is advised. The working languages of the conference are English, French, and Spanish.

Papers: Individual papers will be organised into panels by the conference committee. Paper presentations should not exceed 20 minutes. To propose a paper, please send a title, a 250-500 word (max.) abstract, along with your contact mail and a short biographical note, including current institutional affiliation and area of specialisation, to Leila Abu-Shams Pagès at leila.abushams@ehu.es and Araceli González Vázquez at araceli.gonzalez@ehu.es
