IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic on “5G Networks: End-to-end Architecture and Infrastructure”
http://www.comsoc.org/files/Publications/Magazines/ci/cfp/cfpcommag1114.html

Research on 5G networks is currently underway exploring different architectural paths which can address the huge explosion in mobile data of a hyperconnected society. Key drivers for 5G include: fast creation and deployment of new and yet unforeseen services and usage models through diversity in access speeds and flexible/scalable connectivity, in an energy efficient and secure manner. New business models beyond IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, such as Network as a Service (NaaS), Data as a Service (DaaS), and Knowledge as a Service (KaaS), are expected to emerge. New user experiences based on “zero distance” and “full immersive” services will capitalize on a 5G infrastructure built with novel technologies, such as SDN, ICN, semantic and cloud networking.

This Feature Topic (FT) will shed light on the fundamental end-to-end technologies for the advanced 5G network infrastructure that will underpin the Future Internet. Particular challenges include the definition of new network architectures, functions and interfaces that can provide hyper connectivity to trillions of devices and feature a 1000-fold E2E capacity increase by 2020. Solutions for adaptive resource management, flexible spectrum usage, ultra-dense networks, dynamic deployment of network functions, and service-oriented provisioning are sought. (Authors working solely on radio interface aspects of 5G Networks should consider submitting their papers to: www.comsoc.org/files/Publications/Magazines/ci/cfp/cfpcommag0214.html.)

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• New architecture for services and service delivery capabilities including new paradigms and infrastructure (r)evolution: SDN, ICN, semantic networking, cloud networking and distributed mobility
• Software defined air interface and spectral usage techniques, including disruptive approaches for increasing network capacity and new wireless backhaul solutions
• Network Functions Virtualization (NFV): architecture and implementation experience
• New multiple accesses (“no cell” concept), new radio resource management techniques, physical layer procedures, and coding & modulations schemes
• Programmable optical backbone networks with petabit throughput
• New access protocols and procedures for collaborative communications
• 5G Management and Orchestration
• New networking approaches for exa-scale cloud data centers and Edge computing
• Internet of Vehicles – Safety and Delay Critical Network of Cloudlets
• E2E QoS/E and traffic-awareness in 5G
• 3D Audio and Video
• Augmented Reality for mobile terminals
• Immersive collaborative media
• New types of devices
• 5G Evaluation Tools and Testbeds

Submission Guidelines

Articles should be tutorial in nature and written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article. Authors must follow the IEEE Communications Magazine's guidelines for preparation of the manuscript. Complete guidelines for prospective authors can be found at:
http://www.comsoc.org/commag/paper-submission-guidelines

It is very important to note that the IEEE Communications Magazine strongly limits mathematical content, and the number of figures and tables. Paper length should not exceed 4,500 words. All articles to be considered for publication must be submitted through the IEEE Manuscript Central (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/commag-ieee) by the deadline. Select “November 2014/5G E2E Architecture and Infrastructure” as the submission category.

Important Dates

• Full Paper Submission Deadline: 12 February 2014 (New)
• Decisions Notification: 01 July 2014
• Final Manuscripts Due: 01 September 2014
• Publication of Future Topic: November 2014
