CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS
Creating Personal, Social, and Urban Awareness through Pervasive Computing A book edited by Bin Guo, Northwestern Polytechnical University, China Daniele Riboni, University of Milano, Italy Peizhao Hu, NICTA, Australia To be published by IGI Global: http://bit.ly/KJEiMp Introduction Over the last few years, several research efforts have been made to model, extract, and manage the context data of users, devices, and surrounding environment, in order to enhance the user experience. The recent emergence of social network applications, the prevalence of sensor-equipped mobile devices (e.g., GPS, accelerometers), and the availability of large amounts of geo-referenced data (Twitter messages, Foursquare check-ins, etc.) have enabled the analysis of new context dimensions that involve individual, social, and urban context. Data available nowadays include not only people's mobility patterns, but also emotional status and activities; these data are massively produced and shared in real time by users. Extracting the collective intelligence process that generates those data is a fundamental research issue with important applications, which could improve not only the experience of single users, but also the community, organizations, and societies. In order to exploit these massive data sets, novel methods must be devised to model and understand the way in which people interact and behave in the environment. Objective of the Book With the development of sensor-enhanced mobile phones, the prevalence of sensing devices in buildings and urban facilities, as well as the growth of social network services, pervasive computing is stepping out from lab environments into our daily life. The “big data” obtained from real environments presents unprecedented opportunities to understand human life, organizations, and societies. Under this background, the objective of this book is to make a thorough exploration of the emerging research trends of pervasive computing, more specifically defined as: personal awareness, social awareness, and urban awareness. We will provide an overview of the theories, state-of-the-art techniques, and practical applications that are related to the three dimensions of context awareness, and provide a remark on how far we are from the new era of context-awareness. Target Audience The proposed title covers a new era of context-aware computing, with a focus extension from personal awareness to social and urban awareness. It discusses topics overlapping a number of disciplines and fields in computer science: context-awareness (context gathering, modeling, and management), pervasive and ubiquitous computing, activity recognition, social and urban intelligence, data mining, etc. Therefore, the most typical audience is from the field of context-awareness and pervasive computing research. We believe the proposed title will aid to the prospective audience, e.g. to university lecturers and professors, students, researchers, and developers of the context-aware applications. With a focus on the current theme of “big data”, industry practitioners can also benefit from the latest development in the field of context-aware and pervasive computing, and understand how “big data” contribute to the realization of personal, social, and urban awareness. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to the following: · Context-awareness - Emerging trends of context awareness - Context gathering and modeling - Context reasoning/extraction from large-scale data - Infrastructure support for the next generation context systems · Personal awareness - Mobile phone sensing - Personal activity recognition - Personal awareness in smart environments - Healthcare · Social awareness - Social context understanding - Enhancing social interaction among peers - Mobile social networks - Community service provision · Urban awareness - Urban sensing - Traffic planning - Intelligent Transportation Systems - Human mobility patterns Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before Jul. 30, 2012, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Please be noted that we will only accept original work (or at least 30% difference) that has not been published elsewhere. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by Aug. 30, 2012 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by Nov. 30, 2012. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Publisher This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea Group Reference), “Medical Information Science Reference,” “Business Science Reference,” and “Engineering Science Reference” imprints.
