Call For Papers

The Special Workshop on Social Media Analysis and Mining, hosted in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM 2012), provides an open forum for presentations and thoughtful discussion on the emerging fields of social media analysis and mining. Online social networks like Facebook and Twitter have witnessed explosive growth over the course of the past decade. The use of these networks and the social features of other sites or applications intersects with nearly every facet of our lives, defining and evolving the nature of our social interactions. This phenomenal surge of interest and adoption of online social networks and other social computing utilities creates an outstanding opportunity for those interested in collecting or analyzing real world data. Further, it provides a testing ground for exploring new methods of analyzing and handling data at scales seldom seen before. This workshop will provide a venue for academic researchers, students, practitioners, and others with an interest in online social network analysis and data mining concepts to come together and share their ideas, network, and learn new methods for tackling complex problems in these exciting fields.

Paper Submissions

Workshop organizers invite quality submissions on all aspects of social media analysis, mining, and knowledge discovery. Papers should be original and innovative, rigorously evaluated and well-presented. Broad areas of interest include, but are not limited to: the application of data mining concepts and techniques such as modeling, clustering, and classification to online social network data, network generation or informational retrieval from existing platforms, data cleaning and data types for working with social data at scale, as well as other topics deemed relevant to social computing, data mining, and large-scale networks.

All submitted papers will be judged based on their significance, originality, repeatability, and clarity. Papers that do not comply with the Submission Guidelines listed below will be rejected without review. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press. Regular paper will be allocated 10 pages in the proceedings, and longer oral presentation time, whereas short papers will be allowed 6 pages in the proceedings, with shorter oral presentation time.

Repeatability Guideline

To ensure the long term viability of data mining research, every effort should be made to provide the source-code (or executables), as well as the datasets (or their closest publicly available equivalents). The experimental results section should mention all relevant implementation details and parameter specifications, so that the results can be independently duplicated.
