Call For Papers

Emulating human intelligence by using complex hardware and software systems has been the core goal of the AI and robotics fields since their inception. In recent years, research in this ambitious goal has been reinvigorated by the advances in various areas such as computer hardware, sensors, actuators, neuroscience, cognitive science and algorithms. Cross-disciplinary areas, like cognitive robotics, developmental robotics, human-level AI, cognitive systems and artificial general intelligence, are flourishing like never before. The time is now ripe to focus on human-like intelligence and human-like robotics from the point of view of complex systems.

This Special Issue will in fact address human-level AI and robotic systems from a complex systems perspective, i.e., it aims to exploring questions such as:
- How complex is human-level intelligence?
- What kinds of subsystems must be integrated to achieve human-level intelligence?
- To what degree does human-level intelligence rely on emergent properties?
- To what extent is complexity science (attractors, self-organizing criticality, network theory, etc.) useful for understanding human-level intelligence?
- To what extent can human-level intelligence be achieved by integrating components that have been engineered, tested and perhaps commercially deployed for other, more specialized purposes?

This Special Issue is open to contributions on any topic directly related to human-like intelligence or human-like robotics, touching on at least one of the issues mentioned above. Submissions presenting empirical or mathematical results are especially welcomed; but conceptually rigorous and innovative contributions of any kind will be seriously considered, if relevant. Specific topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Integrated Systems for Human-Level Intelligence
- Integrated Systems for Embodied Human-Level Intelligence
- Complex Dynamical Systems for Human-Level Intelligence
- Neuro-Symbolic Integration Systems or Approaches and Its Applications
- Integrative Cognitive Architectures for Human-Level Intelligence
- Artificial Brains and Its Applications
- Cognitive Robotics, Developmental Robotics and Its Applications
- Theory or Application of Lifelong Learning, Transfer Learning, Meta-Learning Multitasking,
Learning from Partial Observations for complex learning environments
- Autonomous Behavior, The Guiding Role of Emotions and Motivation in Discovery
- Emergent Intuitive Behavior and Creativity in Complex Systems
- The Role of Insight, Curiosity and Imagination in Human-Like Problem Solving
- Theory or Application of Structured Learning and Structured Intelligent Systems
- Knowledge Representation in Human-Level Intelligent Systems
- Machine Consciousness
- Recent Developments in Artificial Art (Music Composing, Poetry Writing, Painting)
- Human-Like Intelligent Systems in Manufacturing, Game Playing and Scheduling
