Special Issue on
“Advances of Multimedia Big Data on the Cloud”
IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing

***Call for Papers***
Today’s multimedia big data is becoming a part of daily life in our society, industry and academia to access different multimedia systems, services and applications in terms of internet search, social media stream, internet-of-things-based streams, video stream in surveillance, medical image or video stream, mobile phone photos or video stream, business transactions, to name a few. However, due to the challenge of managing Exabyte of such multimedia big data in terms of computations, communications, storage, and sharing, there is a growing demand of an infrastructure to have on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, storages, processing, applications and services) to collect, store, preserve, manage, analyze, and share huge quantities of multimedia data. Cloud computing is such an infrastructure providing scalability, flexibility, agility, and ubiquity in terms of massive scale multimedia data processing, storage, access and communications.

The potential of this emergent research on multimedia big data is huge because of the major challenges in dealing with uncertainty, unpredictability (e.g., data volume, velocity and heterogeneity or variety) and massiveness with regards to real-time cross-media integration, multi-scale analysis and processing, where media is originated from multiple heterogeneous media sources with a variety of modality as well as context. Moreover, provisioning of cloud resources for multimedia big data applications further enhances many technical challenges with regards to capturing, storage, searching, correlating, transferring, sharing, analysis, and visualization of multimedia.

Topics:

This special issue targets a mixed audience of researchers and investigators from several communities and research fields, including those from social media, multimedia signal processing, distributed and cloud computing. This issue will only consider paper on new technologies, applications, services, and novel ideas to achieve realization of multimedia big data on clouds.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Multi-modal information retrieval for big data on clouds
• Big data on clouds for speech-enabling healthcare
• Novel approaches and techniques for co-processing of cloud-hosted multimedia big data
• Resource management for multimedia big data on clouds
• Media analysis and recommendation utilizing multimedia big data
• Real time analytics and communications on cloud-hosted streaming of media data
• Personalized (i.e. consumer experience) and QoE-aware multimedia big data
• Emerging analytic techniques and processing of cross-media stream exploration, fusion, and recommendation over cloud
• Multimedia big data-enabling social networks on clouds
• Multidimensional visualization systems of multimedia big data on clouds
• Novel models, frameworks, and algorithms for emerging cloud-based multimedia applications

Tentative Schedule:

• Paper submission due: Jan 31, 2016
• First-round decision: May 15, 2016
• Revision submission: July 15, 2016
• Notification of final decision: August 30, 2016
• Submission of final paper: October 15, 2016
• Publication date: Jan 31, 2017

Submission & Major Guidelines

All papers of SI are treated as "fresh" submissions - should be peer reviewed as per TCC standard. If paper is extended from conference, it needs at least 70% new materials with "brand" new ideas and results. Priority should be given to papers presenting "fresh/innovative" ideas proposed for "the first" time in TCC paper. Please note that submitted papers will be considered in this SI, if all experiments related to Multimedia Big Data are conducted on Clouds.
Submitted articles must not have been previously published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. Papers should be submitted directly to the IEEE TCC at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tcc, and must follow TCC formatting guidelines.

Authors should select “SI-Advances of Multimedia Big Data on the Cloud” when they reach the “Step 1: Type, Title & Abstract” step in the submission process.
