PERSUASIVE 2014 - The 9th International Conference on Persuasive Technology
May 21-23, Padua, Italy

First Call For Papers

Persuasive Technology (PT) is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the design and development of interactive technologies aimed at changing users’ attitudes or behaviors through persuasion and social influence, but not through coercion or deception.
The 9th International Conference on Persuasive Technology (PERSUASIVE 2014) will be hosted in Padua, Italy, on May 21-23, and will build on the success of previous conferences held at Eindhoven, Stanford, Oulu, Copenhagen, Claremont, Columbus, Linköping, and Sydney. Academics, students, and practitioners interested in theories, design and applications development related to persuasion are invited to submit their work for presentation at the conference.

SCOPE
The scope of the conference includes (but is not limited to) the following topics:
- Theory of persuasive technologies
- Design of persuasive technologies
- Evaluation and validation of persuasive applications
- Cognition and persuasive technology
- Ethical aspects of persuasive technology
- Political and cultural consequences of persuasive technology
- Habit change, social practices and cultural values
- Mass persuasion and interactive technologies
- Persuasive systems
- Persuasive interfaces
- Persuasive visualization

- Persuasive technology and religion

SPECIAL THEME:
PERSUASIVE, MOTIVATING, EMPOWERING VIDEOGAMES
Adding game elements is one of the most challenging, acclaimed and updated strategy to turn any information and communication technology application into a system that persuades, motivates, and empowers users to take action. This year the conference builds bridges between persuasion and videogames, serious games, and game-based learning communities; a special session of the program will be devoted to these issues and prominent representatives will be invited. Designing game and gamification will be explored as processes creating persuasive products and generating new empowering features for interactive technologies. If you are a researcher or practitioner who works at designing, developing or evaluating persuasive games or you are studying persuasion through play, this is the perfect time to participate in the conference.

SUBMISSION TYPES
PAPER: this format is suitable for works that have been completed with results at the time of submission and, regardless of the length of the paper, are self-sufficient scientific contributions. Papers can be short (6 pages) or long (12 pages) in Springer LNCS format, and describe work not presented, published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. We encourage authors to use all allotted pages for their type of submission. Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings and be devoted one timeslot (10 to 20 minutes) for oral presentation.

POSTER: this format is suitable for descriptions of small studies/experiences, of project outlines, of works still in progress. Authors should submit a 2-page abstract in Springer LNCS format. Accepted posters will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings. Posters will be displayed and presented during a dedicated session of the conference. Poster presenters are required to register and be present at the conference in order to describe the content to the visitors.

DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM ABSTRACT: The Doctoral Consortium is a special session of the conference where PhD students in the early phases of their research can receive advice in a constructive and informal atmosphere. Students present and discuss their research with other PhD students and a panel of established researchers in the area of Persuasive Technology. Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a 2-page abstract in Springer LNCS format describing their research question, its position with respect to the state of the art, their research plans and methodology, ideas, and results achieved so far. Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings.

WORKSHOPS/TUTORIALS: Workshops and tutorials are meant to gather a number of people to work interactively on a topic and exchange ideas or to learn a specific practice; there might be short presentations but the discussion will prevail, leading to new advances. Approved workshops and tutorials will be announced on the website; they will actually take place during a half-day session before the conference if a minimum number of 10 attendees will register for them. Candidate organizers can submit their proposal as a 2-page description format including the name of the organizers, motivations, organization, expected outcome, list of discussants/supporting materials.

DEMO & SHOWCASES: if you want to demonstrate a piece of persuasive technology during the demo session so that attendees can try and interact with it, please submit a 2-page description, including authors, purpose of the system, status of implementation and deployment, contents of the demo to be shown at the conference, equipment. If you want to show a commercial product then you might be asked to pay an exhibition fee.

IMPORTANT DATES
All submissions deadline: November 29, 2013
Decision notification: January 31, 2014

Attention will be paid in the reviewing process to originality, technical soundness, quality of writing, ethics, validation, and connections with other work in the domain of persuasive technology.
To support the blind review process, submissions need to be anonymous. Names and affiliations must be removed from the title page, excessive self-citation in the bibliography must be kept to a minimum and citation to the authors' previous work in the text body must be in third person (e.g. avoiding “As we described in [1], …” and using instead “As (Author Name) described in [1]).
At least one author per submission is required to register and be present at the conference. Inclusion in the proceedings is conditional upon successful registration.

PUBLICATIONS
Accepted papers will be published by Springer in a volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (www.springer.com/lncs).
