Call For Papers

As part of the IEEE Communications Society’s premier international conference GLOBECOM 2010, the 2010 IEEE Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) will be held in conjunction with the GLOBECOM in Miami, Florida, USA, 6-10 December 2010. Traditionally, OWC relies on high power solid-state infrared lasers for medium-to-long range optical communications. Recently there have been tremendous advances in light emitting diodes, laser diodes, and photodiodes in visible light and ultraviolet wavelengths. Those semiconductor optical devices provide huge potentials for short/medium range wireless communication applications at small size and low cost.

This workshop aims to bring together researchers and engineers in emerging wireless visible light (VL) and ultraviolet (UV) communications, in addition to infrared (IR) communications or free space optics (FSO). It will primarily focus on short-to-medium range optical wireless communications, from indoor to outdoor, from atmosphere to terrestrial and underwater. Topics of interest include, but are NOT limited to:

OWC Device and Link Level

- Communication component design and optical device characterization

- Optical source radiation safety in communication design

- Noise modeling for optical wireless systems

- Modeling and characterization of indoor diffused and reflected light beams

- Atmospheric scattering, absorption, and turbulent channel modeling

- Underwater optical channel modeling and link design

- Beam diverging and concentrating techniques

- Optical/Electrical transceiver design, optimization and integration

- Modulation, coding and detection techniques adaptive to device and link properties

- MIMO, diversity, imaging receiver and advanced signal processing techniques

- Other link performance enhancement techniques

- Pointing, acquisition and tracking in mobile scenarios

OWC System and Network Level

- VL and UV communication system design perspectives

- UV communication range/rate/BER performance tradeoffs

- New results of IR communication

- Link duplexing and channel access techniques

- Wavelength planning and spatial reuse

- Integration of lighting with VL communication (VLC)

- Centralized and distributed OWC network designs

- Coexistence and interoperability of VLC with other communication networks

OWC Applications

- Geolocation, navigation and sensor networks

- Mobile-to-infrastructure and mobile-to-mobile communication

- Vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-traffic light communication

- Next generation wireless networks

- Mobile ad hoc networks

- Underwater communication and sensor networks

- Inter-satellite FSO links and deep space optical wireless

- Ground-to-air and air-to-air FSO links


Important Dates

- Submission due: July 2, 2010 (Friday)

- Decision notification due: August 13, 2010 (Friday)

- Camera-ready and registration due: Aug 31, 2010 (Tuesday)


Submission Guidelines

IEEE OWC Workshop accepts only novel, previously unpublished papers in the area of optical wireless communications. Prospective authors are encouraged to submit an IEEE conference style paper up to 5 pages to this workshop (including all text, figures, and references) through EDAS submission system (http://www.edas.info), but one additional page is allowed with additional publication fee. (If any problem during submission is encountered, please contact: dxu@ee.ucr.edu). An accepted paper must be registered before the registration deadline. An accepted paper must be presented at the workshop. Failure to register before the deadline will result in automatic withdrawal of the paper from the workshop proceedings and the program. All accepted and presented papers will be included in the IEEE GLOBECOM proceedings and IEEE digital library. GLOBECOM has the right to remove an accepted and registered but not presented paper from the IEEE digital library.
