Call For Papers

George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate, Museum and Gardens—the most popular presidential site in America—is seeking submissions for entries on a variety of topics to be included in a new online encyclopedia. Scholars of eighteenth century America are particularly encouraged to apply, however applications are also welcomed from academics and graduate students with an advanced degree in any period of American History. All contributors will receive full authorial recognition on their entries. The online encyclopedia will be a high traffic website, affording writers the opportunity to have their work read by broad audiences. Authors will be contributing to a project that will also include entries written by Mount Vernon staff and affiliated research historians.

The George Washington Encyclopedia will be the first and only online encyclopedia exploring the life, career, and legacy of the first President, and will help support the opening of the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington in 2013. Entries will cover a wide spectrum of historical fields, including: social, cultural, political, military, and culinary history, allowing researchers to utilize the encyclopedia as a comprehensive gateway for information about George Washington. The encyclopedia is aimed at general audiences (high school level and above) and will provide informative, well-researched, and authoritative articles that adhere to the highest academic standards, including full source citations.

Please send the Editor a copy of your CV and a short writing sample (two to three pages) if interested in contributing to this exciting project. A list of available entries with word counts and a style guide with deadlines will be sent after initial candidate review.
