WORKSHOP AIMS AND SCOPE
---------------------------
As the World Wide Web grows, it is becoming more and more complex for humans to efficiently find and exploit the information we need. The underlying idea of having a description of data available on the Web, organized in such a way as to be used by machines for automation, integration and reuse across various applications, has been promoted by a number of research fields.

The Third International Workshop on ?Semantic Web Information Management" (SWIM) aims to review the most recent data-centered solutions for the Semantic Web. In particular, the workshop?s ambition is to present and analyze techniques for semantic information management, taking advantage of the synergies between the logical basis of the Semantic Web and the logical foundations of conceptual modeling. Indeed, a leitmotif of these research areas is the proposal of models and methods to represent and manage appropriately structured data, permitting it to be easily machine-processable on the Web. The long-standing experience of the information modeling community can provide a significant contribution to the substantial problems arising in semantic data management using technologies such as RDF, RDFS and OWL.

Contributions are invited for novel research addressing these issues. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Efficiently and Effectively storing large amount of semantic data
- Querying and Reasoning about semantic data
- Exploiting such semantic data in real world scenarios

This workshop would cover the emerging area of Semantic Web calling researchers to debate, propose, and elaborate the foundations for a data-modeling approach to these problems, by presenting running research and projects on these topics.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
------------------
Topics of interest to this workshop include, but are not limited to:

Semantic Web Data Management:

- Languages, tools and methodologies for representing and managing Semantic Web data
- Conversion of legacy data to semantic form
- Information Integration on the Web
- Web Metadata semantics and Use
- Semantic Web information modeling concepts
- Database technologies for the Semantic Web
- Robust and scalable knowledge management on the Web
- Information extraction for the Semantic Web
- Ontology mapping, merging, and alignment
- Ontology modeling, reuse, extraction, and evolution
- Storage and Indexing via NoSQL DBMS
- GraphDB data modeling
- Distributed Column-stores for semantic data (e.g. HBase)

Semantic Web Data Querying and Reasoning

- Data search, integration, and analysis on the Semantic Web
- Query languages for ontologies
- Searching and Ranking ontologies
- Reasoning paradigms for Web query languages
- Rule interchange formats and Rule markup languages
- User-friendly interfaces to query and reason on the Web

- Semantic Web Services
- Semantic Annotation of Web Systems
- Semantic Bioinformatics
- Organization and Visualization of semantic data to support information management activities
- Semantic Web content creation and annotation
- Mashing up Semantic Web data and processes
- Semantic Stream Data Management (e.g. RFID)
- data quality of Linked data

TARGET AUDIENCE
---------------
The SWIM Workshop invites researchers, engineers, service developers to present their research and works in the field of Semantic Information Management. Papers may deal with methods, models, case studies, practical experiences and technologies.

PAPER SUBMISSION
----------------
Authors are invited to submit original manuscripts, neither submitted nor accepted for publication in any other workshop, conference, or journal. They must be written in English, and formatted using the ACM double-column format. We provide two call for papers:

Research Paper. We solicit submission of original research, as well as experience and vision papers from both researchers and practitioners. The suggested number of pages is 8, and the maximum number of pages is 10. Manuscripts not submitted in the ACM style or having more than 10 pages will not be reviewed and thus automatically rejected. The final, camera-ready version must not exceed 8 pages to avoid page charges.

Short Paper. The Short paper session is an exciting and highly interactive way to demonstrate feasibility of research and to stimulate the discussion on future trends in the application of data management solutions in the context of the Web of Data. Proposals should be focused on new Linked Data modeling developments, advances in their application or innovative use of modeling techniques in such context. The session is not intended for the demonstration of commercial products. The number of pages of the contribution must be no more than 4 pages. This page limit includes all parts of the paper (i.e. title, abstract, body, and bibliography).

Every submitted paper will be carefully reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee and reviews will be returned to the author(s) with comments to ensure the high quality of the accepted papers. Reviewers are not required to read the appendices and the paper should be intelligible without them.

Authors are invited to send their manuscripts as an attachment (PDF/PS format) through the EasyChair system, http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=swim2012. In case of any inquires, please do not hesitate to contact program committee chairs: dvr@dia.uniroma3.it.

PROCEEDINGS
-----------
The Workshop proceedings will be published by ACM. Submission to the Workshop implies the willingness to subscribe and participate to the event for presenting the submitted work (i.e. attendance of at least one of the authors of accepted papers will be mandatory). Final versions of accepted papers must strictly adhere to the ACM guidelines and must include a printable file of the camera-ready version, as well as all source files thereof. No changes to such formatting rules are permitted. Authors of accepted papers must also download and sign a copyright form that will be made available on the Web site of the conference.

Depending on the quality of the submissions, authors of selected papers may be invited to submit extended versions for publication in prestigious international journals.
