The Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA) is accepting abstracts for a 3-day workshop, ““Data Management and Local Knowledge: Building a Network to Support Community-Based Research and Monitoring" to be held in Boulder, CO, U.S.A.

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together researchers, community members, organizations, and projects working on issues surrounding data management for both Local and Traditional Knowledge (LTK) and information from community-based research and monitoring. At the workshop we will:
(i) Hear presentations from a diverse group of projects working on community-based research and monitoring, with emphasis on data management (challenges, issues, questions, systems, etc.);
(ii) Discuss as a group key topics on the theme of data management, local knowledge, and community-based research; and
(iii) Discuss as a group continued development of an international network on data management and local knowledge through collaboration and partnership.

ELOKA is accepting abstracts from individuals, organizations, projects, and communities to present at the ELOKA workshop. We are interested in projects and initiatives that work with LTK and are addressing data management issues in some way – from asking questions about how we can archive our data and information for future generations, to fully operational data management systems. ELOKA is focused on the Arctic, but we are also interested in receiving abstracts from any region in order to exchange experiences and information.

All travel costs will be covered for a limited number of selected abstracts. All participants will be expected to give a 15-20 minute presentation on their work and be part of group discussion. Arctic community members, Elders, researchers and organizations are highly encouraged to apply. We also highly encourage abstracts from community-based organization in other regions working on local knowledge and data management issues.

One of the outcomes of the workshop will be a special journal issue on community-based research and data management. Selected abstracts for the workshop will be invited to develop full papers for the journal issue. Draft papers will be due by the workshop, November 15, 2011, with final papers to be published in the special issue in 2012. You will be notified in May 2011 if your abstract is selected for submission to the journal to provide sufficient time to create a draft prior to the meeting.

If you are interested in attending the workshop, please send an abstract (no more than 500 words) about your community, project, or organization and your interest/work on data management for LTK and/or community-based research to Heidi McCann at heidi.mccann@nsidc.org and/or heidi.mccann@colorado.edu by April 1, 2011. In addition, please indicate if you are interested in contributing a paper to the special journal issue on community-based research and data management.
