Recent advances in automatic collection of educational data motivate the development of tools and methodologies that are able to handle and analyze data and make use of it in a computer-supported fashion. Data mining has become a popular and effective way of discovering new knowledge from large and complex data sets, and particularly, educational data sets. Interesting problems data mining can help to solve are: what are common types of learning behavior (e.g. in online systems), predict the knowledge and interests of a user based on past behavior, etc.

The ISDA-EDM workshop as part of ISDA'09 aims at providing a focused international forum for researchers to present, discuss and explore the state of the art of mining educational data and evaluating usefulness of discovered patterns for various educational applications, as well as to outline promising future research directions.

We encourage authors to submit original papers as well as preliminary and promising works in the topics of the special session.
