Proper cellular communication is necessary for the homeostasis and disease protection in multicellular organisms. A primary mechanism for such communication is mediated by small metabolites that can act not only between cells but also across tissues. Once thought of merely as byproducts of cellular metabolism, metabolites are now known to act as cellular effectors that regulate cell function and tissue health. Cellular metabolites can influence cancer progression, organismal physiology and aging, and overall signaling. But they also act on the immune system and the microbiome to further influence normo- and pathophysiology. As the identity and function of these metabolites have become further appreciated, new technologies to study them and leverage them for therapy have come to the fore.
This meeting will bring together scientists studying metabolites, their signaling properties, and how they affect many aspects of health and disease. Topics: • Metabolites in Signaling • Metabolites in Cancer • Metabolites in Organismal Physiology and Aging • Metabolites in Immunometabolism and the Microbiota • Technologies and ‘omics |
