Conference Theme: Gateways

For its 2027 annual conference, the College English Association (CEA) invites proposals for papers and panels that explore the theme of “Gateways” and their significance in literature, criticism, and pedagogy.

The College English Association, a gathering of scholar-teachers in English studies, welcomes proposals for presentations on “The Profession” for our 57th annual conference. Submit your proposal at www.cea-web.org

We are especially interested in papers exploring the following areas:
-Gateways into the Profession: Mentoring, graduate training, first-generation faculty, and alternative pathways into English studies.
-The English Major as a Gateway: How English programs prepare students for careers, civic engagement, and lifelong learning.
-Public Humanities as Gateway: Connecting scholarship, teaching, and community engagement beyond the university.
-Access, Equity, and Belonging: Removing barriers and expanding participation in English studies and academic careers.
-Career Gateways Beyond the Professoriate
-Institutional Gateways and Gatekeepers: Hiring, promotion, tenure, assessment, accreditation, and departmental leadership.
-Educational Pathways and Transitions: Dual-credit programs, transfer students, graduate professionalization, and cross-sector partnerships.
