Data mining, the art and science of intelligent analysis of (usually
large) data sets for meaningful (and previously unknown) insights, is now being actively applied in industries including defence, medicine, science, financial services, government, insurance, telecommunications, retail and distribution, transportation, and utilities. A popular application of data mining across industries is customer analytics, where the goal is to understand customers and better service those customers, whether this is through marketing, stock management, or fraud discovery.

The Australasian Data Mining Conference has established itself as the premier Australasian meeting for both practitioners and researchers in data mining. Since AusDM02 the conference has showcased research in data mining, providing a forum for presenting and discussing the latest research and developments. A book (Data Mining: Theory, Methodology, Techniques, and Applications, LNCS 3755 / 2006) has been published by Springer in their State-of-the-Art Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, based on research papers from the recent conferences and since 2006, all proceedings have been printed as volumes in the CRPIT series.

This years' conference, AusDM'08, builds on this tradition of facilitating the cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas, experience and potential research directions. Specifically, the conference seeks to
showcase:

- Industry Case Studies;
- Research Prototypes;
- Practical Analytics Technology; and
- Research Student Projects.

This years' conference will be a meeting place for pushing forward the frontiers of data mining in industry and academia.

Scope of the Conference
-----------------------
We are calling for papers, both research and applications, and from both academia and industry, for presentation at the conference. All papers will go through double-blind, peer-review by a panel of international experts. Accepted papers will be published in Volume 87 (Data Mining and Analytics 2008) of the Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology (CRPIT) series by the Australian Computer Society and will also be distributed at the conference. For more details on CRPIT please see: http://www.crpit.com. Selected papers will then be further revised and extended, for publication in a collected volume. Please note that we require that at least one author for each accepted paper will register for the conference and present their work.

AusDM invites contributions addressing current research in data mining and knowledge discovery as well as experiences, novel applications and future challenges. Topics of interest include, but are not restricted
to:

- Applications and Case Studies - Lessons and Experiences
- Business Analytics
- Computational Aspects of Data Mining
- Data Integration, Matching and Linkage
- Data Mining Education
- Data Preparation, Cleaning and Preprocessing
- Embedded Data Mining Technologies
- Evaluation of Results and their Communication
- Implementations of Data Mining in Industry
- Infrastructure for Data Mining
- Integrating Domain Knowledge
- New Data Mining Algorithms
- Process Mining
- Professional Challenges in Data Mining
- Variable Selection and Generation
- Visual Analytics
- New Directions in Data Mining:
- Biomedical Data Mining
- Data Mining for Qualitative Research
- Data Mining Techniques in Security and Surveillance
- Financial Data Mining
- Health Data Mining
- Higher Order Mining
- Link, Graph, Network and Process Mining
- Mining Data from e-Business sites, Blogs and Virtual Communities
- Mining Data Streams
- Mining Semi-structured Data
- Multimedia Data Mining
- Privacy-preserving Data Mining
- Spatial and Temporal Data Mining
- Text Mining in Science and Business

Submission of papers for review
-------------------------------
The length of the submissions is not restricted. We encourage submissions of up to 8-12 pages. We will use a double-blinded review process, i.e. paper submissions must NOT include authors names or affiliations (and also not acknowledgements referring to funding bodies). Self-citing references should also be removed from the submitted papers (they can be added on after the review) for the double blind reviewing purpose.

Paper submissions are required to follow the general format specified for papers in the CRPIT series by the Australian Computer Society.
Details are available from http://crpit.com/Authors.html. LaTeX styles and Word templates may be found on this site. LaTeX is the suggested typesetting package. The electronic submissions should be in PDF and made through the AusDM'08 Submission Page, which will be available at http://ausdm08.togaware.com/

Publication
-----------
The proceedings of the conference will be published by the Australian Computer Society as part Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology series (CRPIT) which is also held in full-text on the ACM Digital Library. Each paper will be fully refereed. In addition, the authors of the best papers from the conference will be invited to extend their papers for possible inclusion in a collected Springer volume.
