Conference Overview
As translation and interpreting practices are reshaped by the accelerating advances of
artificial intelligence, neural networks, and automation, new questions arise: What remains
distinctly human in the act of translation? How can creativity and critical reflection coexist
with algorithmic efficiency?
Organised by the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting and
the MA Science of Translation of the Ionian University, this international conference —
Translating and Interpreting in the Era of Algorithms (TIERA)— invites scholars, researchers,
professionals, and students to explore the emerging interfaces between technology,
translation and interpreting, and language mediation in the 21st century.
The event is held within the framework of the 40th anniversary of the Department’s
founding, marking four decades of innovation, education, and scholarship in translation and
interpreting.
Join us in Corfu, 9–11 October 2026, to celebrate this milestone and collectively
explore the future of translation and interpreting.
Thematic Fields
We welcome proposals for papers, posters, panels, and workshops that address, but are
not limited to, the following themes:
 Translation Technologies and Human Agency
Neural and generative machine translation, post-editing practices, automation
workflows, and human–AI partnership.
 The Creative Translator and the Algorithmic Turn
Literary, artistic, and cultural translation in the age of algorithmic mediation.
 Ethics, Justice, and Responsibility in the Age of Automation
Transparency, bias, authorship, copyright, and the social impact of technological
mediation.
 Interpreting Futures
Remote, hybrid, and technology-assisted interpreting; rethinking training and
professional identity.
 Audiovisual Translation and Accessibility
Developments in subtitling, dubbing, audio description, and inclusive content creation.
 Pedagogical Shifts in Translator and Interpreter Education
Translating pedagogical innovation: balancing humanistic and technological literacies.
 Cultural Mediation and Posthuman Translation
Translators as mediators of meaning across technological, biological, and cultural
boundaries.
 Legal, Institutional, and Policy Perspectives
Translation and interpreting in multilingual governance, language policy, and digital
justice.
 Intralingual Translation
Intervarietal and intravarietal intralingual translation in the age of New Technologies
and AI.
 Translation Criticism
Critical assessment, comparative analysis, and the significance of expert human
evaluation.
Interdisciplinary, practice-based, and collaborative projects that merge theory, research, and
application are strongly encouraged.
Abstract Submission
Please submit an abstract of up to 300 words for papers or posters or an abstract of 500
words for panels and workshops and a short biographical note (150 words) via the
conference's submission form by 20 June 2026.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by 15 July 2026.
Conference language: English, French, German and Greek.
Publications
Selected papers will be considered for publication after the Conference, following a doubleblind peer-review process.
About the Venue — Ionian University, Corfu
Located in the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Corfu, the Ionian University offers an ideal

1984, the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting — the first of
its kind in Greece — continues to serve as a national and international hub for translation

Translation which is a proud member of the European Master’s in Translation (EMT)
network.
