The upcoming book Uppity Medieval Women From Across the Globe aims to bring together comparative studies of ‘uppity’ women — both historical and fictional — from across the globe, exploring how women across cultures and temporal spaces transgressed patriarchal constraints of immanence, often with the pen, the sword, or through sex. Our goal is to engage European ‘uppity women’ in deeper conversation with their global sisters, illustrating how women throughout the Middle Ages faced comparable challenges and expressed similar forms of resistance in diverse medieval communities worldwide. We have received many excellent chapters on women from Europe, North Africa, much of Asia, and the Americas.
The editorial team is currently looking for contributions on African women who embody this theme. Ideally, chapters would address historical or literary women from Sub-Saharan Africa between 500 and 1500, though we are open to stretching these temporal or geographical requirements. If you are interested in please provide a 250-word abstract by March 1. We would also need a 100-word bio note. Please email these materials to the editorial team at: aobermei@unm.edu, domran@unm.edu, and afields2@unm.edu.
For more information on the book and its theoretical outlook, see the original CFP here: https://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/cfp/2022/06/02/uppity-medieval-women-across-the-globe-extended-deadlines.
