Call For Papers

THE BLACK SPECULATIVE IN LITERATURE AND FILM

This panel seeks to examine the Black Speculative as a site of change and resistance across genres within American literature and film. This panel welcomes submissions exploring the topic through the lens of the fantastic, hauntings, science fiction, horror, and everything in between. How might we understand the Black Speculative as a locus of resistance in relation to other elements such as Black temporality, the abject, gender and sexuality? What can we learn about a possible politics of resistance by examining the Black Speculative as a site of change? Please note: this is a proposal for an in-person panel. By July 28, please submit an abstract of 250-300 words, a short biography, and any A/V needs/requests to Laura Thorp, University of South Carolina, at thorp@mailbox.sc.edu and Kelsey Flint-Martin, Midlands Technical College, at flintmartink@midlandstech.edu.
