THEORY MATERIALIZED—ART-OBJECT THEORIZED

Open Philosophy (https://www.degruyter.com/opphil) invites submissions for the topical issue "Theory Materialized—Art-object Theorized," edited by Ido Govrin (University of Tessaly, Greece).

DESCRIPTION

The relation between theory and artistic practice is intricate, multifaceted, and constantly changing. It is sometimes thought of in terms of hierarchy or dichotomy, while other times it is thought of in terms of integration, when theory and artistic practice are seen to be intertwined and complementary to one another. This topical issue will explore the history, current state, and diverse manifestations of the relation between theory and artistic practice (and more broadly, the relation between philosophy and art).
How do theory and artistic practice relate to one another? Or are they mutually exclusive and should thus be considered independently? Is one given precedence or priority over the other? Do they require different methodologies? These problems have been deemed open and unexhausted throughout history, not only due to the broad intellectual scope they pose but also due to the shifting historical context in which they are constantly thought about. Consequently, the relation between theory and artistic practice, philosophy and art, takes on a different shape with each epoch, sometimes favoring one over the other, playing one off against the other, or otherwise.
Within the broad framework of the core theme “Theory Materialized—Art-object Theorized,” this issue seeks contributions to, and beyond, the following:
- reciprocal transformations (of a particular form of thought or exhibitory/artistic practice) that take place between philosophy and art
- epistemological ramifications of a transfiguration to a different but tangential domain of research - Forms of thought as artistic modus operandi
- the art exhibition/object as philosophy beyond discursive language
- the development of the relationship between critical theory and artistic practice over time
- research methodologies bridging philosophy and art
- the artist as sage; the philosopher as maker
- influences of artworks on thought paradigms, and vice versa
- artistic research today: theoretical, methodological, epistemological, and pedagogical reflections
- understanding the (living) world between (critical) destruction and (poetical) creation
- the tendency of post-Kantian thought to seek to constitute an intimate relation between philosophical thinking and art
- intellectual intuition vs. logical-based science (myth vs. Logos)
- Post/Neo-conceptual art practices: past, present, and future

Authors publishing their articles in the special issue will benefit from:

· efficient route to fast-track publication and full advantage of De Gruyter's e-technology.
