Introduction
While computing technologies have remained relatively stable for nearly two decades, new architectural features, such as specialized hardware, heterogeneous cores, deep memory hierarchies, and near-memory processing, have emerged as possible solutions to address the concerns of energy-efficiency, manufacturability, and cost. However, we expect this ‘golden age’ of architectural change to lead to extreme heterogeneity and it will have a major impact on software systems and applications. In this upcoming exascale and extreme heterogeneity era, it will be critical to explore new software approaches that will enable us to effectively exploit this diverse hardware to advance science, the next-generation systems with heterogeneous elements will need to accommodate complex workflows. This is mainly due to the many forms of heterogeneous accelerators (no longer just GPU accelerators) in this heterogeneous era, and the need of mapping different parts of an application onto elements most appropriate for that application component.

Objectives, scope and topics of the workshop
The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum to discuss new and emerging solutions to address these important challenges from the upcoming extreme heterogeneity era. Papers are being sought on many aspects of heterogeneous computing including (but not limited to):

Heterogeneous Programming Environments and Runtime Systems

Automated parallelization and compiler techniques (Autotuning)
Heterogeneous Solutions for HPC and Scientific Applications
Parallel and distributed algorithms
Parallel libraries and frameworks
Parallel processing on heterogeneous systems
Heterogeneous (included Non-von Neuman) Architectures
Power/energy management
Heterogeneous architectures for emerging application domains
Architecture designs including Non-von Neuman architectures, memory and interconnection
Reliability/Benchmarking/Measurements

Keynote:
Toward Extreme Heterogeneity… but how?(Antonio J. Peña)

The tradeoff between hardware specialization and energy consumption, tied to the energy limitations the community is hitting toward exascale computing and beyond, is slowly but unstoppably leading to ubiquitous heterogeneity. This includes not only co-processor accelerators but also memory/storage subsystems and networking elements. While applications see themselves often forced to include some sort of highly-tuned ninja codes to attain high use of resources, the entire software ecosystem (programming models, runtime systems, compilers, OS) is working towards providing efficient and ease-to-use abstractions. In this talk I’ll review heterogeneity trends in HPC and several solutions/attempts to palliate the burden from application developers.

Antonio J. Peña is a Sr. Researcher at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), where he leads the “Accelerators and Communications for HPC” team. He is a former Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellow and Juan de la Cierva Fellow, and prospective Ramón y Cajal Fellow. Among others, Antonio is a recipient of the 2017 IEEE TCHPC Award for Excellence for Early Career Researchers in High Performance Computing and ACM/IEEE Sr. Member. He is involved in the organization and steering committees of several conferences and workshops such as SC, IEEE Cluster, or AsHES. Antonio has been working ever since he started his PhD in system software support for hardware heterogeneity in HPC, covering topics such as remote GPGPU virtualization or heterogeneous memory systems.

Invited Talk:
IRIS: Portable Programming in the Era of Extreme Heterogeneity (Jungwon Kim)

From edge to exascale, computer architectures are becoming more heterogeneous and complex. The systems typically have fat nodes, with multicore CPUs and multiple hardware accelerators such as GPUs, FPGAs, and DSPs. This complexity is causing a crisis in programming systems and performance portability. Several programming systems are working to address these challenges, but the increasing architectural diversity is forcing software stacks and applications to be specialized for each architecture, resulting in poor portability and productivity. This talk argues that a more agile, proactive, and intelligent runtime system is essential to increase performance portability and improve user productivity. To this end, this talk introduces a new runtime system called IRIS. IRIS enables programmers to write portable and flexible programs across diverse heterogeneous architectures from edge to exascale by orchestrating multiple programming platforms in a single execution and programming environment.

Jungwon Kim, PhD, is a Computer Scientist in the Programming Systems Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). At ORNL, he has designed and implemented programming systems for heterogeneous computing and memory architectures. Kim earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Seoul National University.
