Call for Industry Forum

Win the Business Process Innovation Award 2022

Share your success story and proven insights with the world by sending your case to the industry forum of the International Business Process Management Conference and win the BPM 2022 Business Process Innovation Award. All submissions will be presented to and discussed with thought leaders in industry and academia at the 2022 Industry forum at the BPM Conference in Münster on 13-15 September 2022. Submissions will be considered for publication in the third edition of the Business Process Management Cases book published by Springer Nature in 2023 – a hugely impactful case collection, with the first and second volume downloaded over 50 million times.

The BPM Industry Forum at the BPM Conference

The BPM Industry Forum has become one of the most influential events to exchange experiences between academia and practice and to support networking among BPM experts around the world. The forum is the prime event for BPM professionals to engage with academic thought leaders at the International Conference on Business Process Management – the leading global conference on BPM with 20 years of tradition and over 450 presentations in total. The target audience of the industry forum includes business analysts, process managers, chief information officers, chief operations officers, digital transformation managers, project managers, process consultants, industry researchers, related service providers and process scientists.

The BPM forum focusses on cutting edge real-world experiences in leveraging BPM for both improvement and innovation across all sectors. We welcome contributions that take diverse angles on BPM, including technology, methods, governance, strategic alignment, people, and culture. We particularly invite cases that showcase process science – a new way to leverage digital trace data to inform and innovate process management in organization.

We invite practitioners to provide their distinguished and rich view on their process-related endeavors. We encourage to team up with academics, who are experienced with writing up cases – and we are also happy to help finding academic partners to team up with.

Case studies written by service providers and BPM vendors only and without the involvement of the case organization are not desired. In fact, a good case study will have an honest and detailed reflection on lessons learnt and critical reflections. Examples of questions we would like to jointly find answers to include:
- How to utilize new technologies for process innovation?
- How to scope and size a BPM initiative?
- How to deliver strategic value through BPM?
- How to build a process-oriented organization?
- How to create successful BPM governance?
- How to leverage and coordinate BPM within large, global initiatives?
- How to manage change that is unleashed by BPM initiatives?
- How to design robust and agile processes in light of external change?
- How to co-improve cross-organizational processes with business partners?
- How to build and validate the business case for BPM?

Organizations are invited to submit their cases and present them at the BPM conference. We are, among others, interested in cases that demonstrate the application of new technologies such as Robotic Process Automation, Process Mining, Internet of Things, Blockchain, Virtual/Augmented Reality, Predictive Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Building Information Models, Digital Twins, Smart Devices, etc. to illustrate what business process management can deliver in practice.

The Business Process Innovation Award 2022 Committee and Selection Procedure

The Award Committee of the BPM Industry Forum will recognize the most innovative and impactful case with the Business Process Innovation Award. All presented cases will be included in an international Business Process Innovation Cases Book published by Springer in 2023. The main selection criterion is the extent to which impactful process innovation occurred. Submissions need to demonstrate process innovation in three dimensions:

- Viability: innovative business model with tangible impact enabled by a business process
- Feasibility: successful implementation of the process innovation despite technical, organisational, regulatory or ethical challenges
- Desirability: innovative and appreciated new process-based customer experience

A submission should have one focus, but cover all three aspects. The jury will take these criteria into account for their selection.

Submit your case by May 1st, 2022 and increase the global recognition of your work. Benefit from networking with global peers and researchers at the industry forum from 13-15 September 2022.

Your Benefits
- Present your case and discuss it with peers
- Win the Business Process Innovation Award
- Publish your case in an international book
- Network with global experts

Case Description
All cases follow a unified structure that makes the relevant case knowledge easily accessible and transferrable to other contexts. Following the structure the chapters are short and sharp. The structure helps readers in finding the most interesting parts of the cases.
- Introduction – What is the story of the case? A brief narrative of the entire case informs readers by summarizing its key aspects (e.g., goal, approach, impact).
- Situation faced – What was the initial problem or opportunity that led to the action taken? The context of the case is specified concerning needs, stakeholders, constraints, incidents, and objectives.
- Action taken – What was done? What actions were taken, such as in regard to process redesign or process innovation? How does technology facilitate the innovation? What methods and approaches were used? What were roadblocks and how did you overcome these?
- Results achieved – What short, mid and long-term effects result from the actions taken? Results could take the form of changes in performance measures and/or qualitative statements from employees, customers, and other business partners. To what degree were expectations met or not met? What was the net benefit taken related investments into account?
- Lessons learned – What did the organization learn from the case? What can others learn (e.g., design principles, success factors)? What would you do differently? Lessons learned are grounded in the case and serve as example for others.
