The Great Lakes Bioinformatics Conference will be hosted by Ohio University in Athens, Ohio on May 2-4, 2011.

The conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of research findings and methods. An important goal for the conference is to foster long term collaborative relationships and networking opportunities within the domain of computational approaches to biology that benefit the Great Lakes region.

Keynote Speaker
Richard Lenski, - Tuesday, May 3, 2010

Richard Lenski is the John Hannah Professor of Microbial Ecology at Michigan State University. His research examines the genetic mechanisms and ecological Ricard Lenskiprocesses that cause evolutionary change. Unlike most evolutionary biologists, Prof. Lenski employs an experimental approach using bacteria to study evolution in action. In one experiment that he started 22 years ago, Prof. Lenski and his students have been watching 12 populations of E. coli while they evolve in the laboratory for over 50,000 generations, allowing them to quantify evolutionary dynamics with unprecedented precision. In addition to his work on bacteria, Prof. Lenski collaborates with researchers from computer science and other fields to study ‘digital organisms’ – computer programs that replicate, mutate, and evolve – and the emergence of complex functions and communities. Prof. Lenski was an NSF Presidential Young Investigator and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundations. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences.
