EDITED BOOK: Extended Reality for Healthcare Systems

Healthcare is an application domain that has rapidly evolved with advancement in technology and continues to remain the focus of most inter/trans-disciplinary research. The methodical nature of practices and processes involved in healthcare gives rise to several challenges and problems that clinicians have struggled with for years. Some of the commonly known healthcare issues include high costs of training practitioners and grave risks associated with patient safety and wellbeing during surgeries. Besides this, the future of healthcare lies in improved precision, personalization and enriched effectiveness.
Considering the fact that the healthcare industry is a USD $3 trillion industry, active industry/academic research involvement remains inevitable. One of the key technologies that have evolved in recent times for healthcare transformation is extended reality, which is an umbrella term used for augmented, virtual and mixed reality. Several use cases have already been implemented in Europe and North America that make use of VR glasses for surgery and medical training. However, research in this area is still in its infancy and is far from the level where it can aggressively be adopted into critical care systems.
One of the most crucial aspects of how this technology can improve existing systems includes improved precision and reduced costs. For instance, transferring medical education and training to extended reality shall provide more practice to professionals in near-real environment before they are exposed to real scenarios. Moreover, use of extended reality can have significant cost impacts on areas such as elderly care and remote monitoring of patients. This book shall cover different aspects of using extended reality for diverse healthcare applications and aggregate the current state of research in this domain. The core audience of this book includes researchers, healthcare professionals, allied medical practitioners, academicians and inter-disciplinary science experts. In entirety, this book shall explore and investigate the use of extended reality in healthcare, creating a milestone for prospective research in the development of –
State of the art tech-driven healthcare systems
Technologies for improving the quality of healthcare
Healthcare solutions that are inclusive and cost-effective
Engineered environment for healthy living
Key highlights of the book include:
Developed with a thorough emphasis on evidence and research-based practices and work.
Comprehensive coverage of XR technology and their applications to medical contexts.
Major focus includes the future, limitations and challenges associated with the use and adoption of XR for healthcare.
