upramolecular chemistry is the foundation of novel technologies for environmental sensors and molecular diagnostics, and there is a great gap in Open Access chemical literature. This Special Issue, edited by Professor Rogerio R Sotelo-Mundo and Dr Adrián Ochoa-Terán, represents a great opportunity to contribute to this area and to get exposure to the diverse and interdisciplinary readership of PeerJ Inorganic Chemistry.
Supramolecular Recognition and Interactions in Inorganic and Bioinorganic Systems Inorganic and bioinorganic scaffolds are a crucial part of natural and artificial systems and materials. Specificity and selectivity are fundamental for the design of sensors and receptors, whereas, in natural processes such as biomineralization, the interaction between natural scaffolds and cations is key. The deposition of minerals in biological substrates has led to the biotectonic concept and specific designs of nature-inspired functional materials for medicine and biotechnology. Also significant is the continued development of closed and open receptors for sensing hosts such as ions, drugs, metabolites, or pollutants based on supramolecular chemistry concepts. This special issue invites the submission of manuscripts that report original research on experimental and theoretical studies of molecular recognition in inorganic and bioinorganic systems. Specific topics – such as anion recognition and sensing, biomineralization, biotectonics, cucurbit[n]uril receptors, cyclodextrins, macrocycles and cyclophanes, dendritic effect, and contrast imaging – are welcomed. Further, novel applications, such as sensors, novel materials, biomaterials, and others, are encouraged.
