CALL FOR PAPERS

THE JOURNAL OF GENDER, RACE & JUSTICE invites paper submissions for its 15th anniversary symposium. The symposium, “War on: The Fallout of Declaring War on Social Issues,” will explore the consequences of declaring war on society’s problems.

From the War on Poverty, to the War on Crime, to the Wars on Drugs and Terror, by utilizing the “War on” rhetoric, policy and lawmakers unite the public against a common enemy and authorize themselves to act more aggressively. Our symposium will be examining who gets swept into this class of enemies, and how this practice of declaring war on social issues affects marginalized communities.

The symposium will take place on March 3rd and 4th, 2011.

Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Race and the War on Drugs
- The relationship between the prison system and social wars
- Female casualties in social wars
- Immigration and the War on Terror
- The effect of social wars on the market crash and current economic climate
- The Wars on Drugs and Crime and the juvenile justice system
- Progression, or lack of progression, in the War on Poverty, 55 years later
- Medical marijuana and the War on Drugs

Please email a proposal and curriculum vitae to Sarah Pierce at sarah-c-pierce@uiowa.edu.

Proposal Deadline is November 15th, 2010
