The 2nd Conference on Digital Preservation and processing technology of Written heritage will be held in conjunction with the 6th IEEE International Congress on Information Science and Technology (IEEE CiSt'20) the week of December 12th – 18th 2020 in Agadir - Essaouira, Morocco.
The conference aims to serve as a valuable venue for researchers and practitioners to exchange their insights, experiences, and best practices. The session will focus on various aspects related to the preservation strategies and workflows, digital preservation frameworks, content management and automatic processing, infrastructure, systems, and tools used for handling and preserving written heritage. The written cultural heritage and more generally scriptures records are means of communication across space and transmission through time of customs, culture, beliefs and laws. They also constitute the archive of the evolution of mentalities, knowledge, sciences and arts, and are considered as guardian of speech and language. Ancient scriptures constitute a gigantic set of written texts of which books, manuscripts, documents and any supporting medium of writing are part of it. The digital preservation, dissemination and valorization of written heritage are the right and duty of any nation. Already in antiquity, they were aware that the book is the surest way to transmit an inheritance and they made use of all the means to preserve it, even if it needs a copy or a transfer from one support to another, thus losing the original reference quality. The desire to keep the document in its original form is more pressing only in the modern era. Technology seems to have opened a new and larger avenue to digital preservation and processing of written heritage. The mission of spreading cultural heritage does not rest solely on conservation of written objects as it was traditionally conceived, but also on giving researchers access to them and sharing them with the general public. Digital technologies allow considerable advances in classification, archiving, automatic analysis and interpretation of documents. However, the conversion of the ancient written heritage into digital heritage poses many problems and challenges. The scanning operation represents an important task, and it poses the problem of the loss of information within the process of object transformation. As a result, writing has entered a phase of redefinition, not only of the written message, but also of mechanisms and means of its transmission. The modern era celebrates awareness of digital-oriented language and medium, allowing a more efficient preservation of the awareness of history and tradition, necessary to better understand the present and planning the future. TOPICS We solicit submissions of original ideas and papers describing significant results and developments from both researchers and practitioners in a specific range of fields addressing the following topics : - Handwritten text recognition (HTR), page segmentation and layout out analysis - Document analysis, Region/Segment classification - Manuscript’s image preprocessing - Computer support tools for manual transcription - Multiview Geometry and 3D Computer Vision - Imaging and Video Analysis and Understanding for Cultural Heritage - Assessing impact, use and value of digital cultural resources (methodologies, approaches and issues) - Optical character recognition (OCR) - Training OCR models CHAIRS Dr. Ouafae Nahli, ILC CNR, Pisa Italy Dr. Anna Tonazzini, ISTI CNR, Pisa Italy PAPER SUBMISSION Prospective authors should submit, by using the online paper submission platform, a paper of 4 to 6 maximum, including references in scholarly English and describing their original work using the IEEE template.
