----- CALL FOR PAPERS -----

The philosophy of technology is an established area of philosophy concerned with a range of metaphysical, epistemological and axiological questions. An important part of the contemporary debate revolves around issues such as what sort of thing are artifacts, how we know them and what values they embody. This First International Symposium of Philosophy of Technology aims to discuss the nature of technical objects, the ways we think about their roles and the ways in which we address the values that they embody. In addition, the Symposium aims to become a space of encounter and dialogue between two traditions of philosophy, the analytic and Continental, which for various reasons remain distant from each other. The theme of the meeting (“The Artificial and the Living in Current Philosophy of Technology”) aspires to bring together works that analyze the various issues arising from this divide between the technical and the living, including the philosophical origins of such distinction.

Each paper will be the basis for a 30-40 minute presentation. Submissions should be sent to coloquiofdt@gmail.com with two attachments (.doc, .pdf or .rtf) containing:

(1) An extended abstract of about 2,000 words presenting the title of the paper and clearly indicating the argumentative scheme of the work (specifying the problem addressed, and presenting the author’s thesis and a bibliography).
(2) Author’s details: name, institutional affiliation, and email address.

* The name and institutional affiliation of the author must be kept separate, as the abstracts received will be subjected to blind peer review by experts appointed by the organizing committee. The latter reserves the right to request the full paper if necessary.

* The Academic Committee will select a total of five papers for the Symposium.

Deadline for receipt of abstracts: September 27, 2010.
Date of notice of acceptance / rejection: October 8, 2010.
