Call For Papers

The first Lisbon-Macau Philosophy Symposium aims to establish a constructive dialogue between philosophical perspectives originating in the Lusophone-speaking world and China. This event builds on the legacy of intercultural encounter connecting Lisbon and Macau. These port cities at the Western and Eastern shores of the Eurasian continent have been sites of intercultural exchange where ideas, beliefs and practices from a variety of traditions have been exposed to each other for more than four-and-a-half centuries.

We invite proposals for papers dedicated to selected issues in Luso-Chinese philosophical encounter or on other aspects of East-West philosophical dialogue. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

•Meditative practices and contemplative experience in Buddhism, Daoism and Christianity
•Rituals, spiritual exercises and their criticism
•Saudade, nostalgia, melancholy, humour and retreat in Lusophone and Chinese as well as other East and South Asian traditions
•Conceptions of cosmopolitanism and national identity derived from classical and modernist literature (e.g. from poetic works by Luís Camões, Fernando Pessoa or Lu Xun)
•Metaphysics of oneness and notions of the self East and West
•Cultural perspectivism
•Conceptions of rhythm as well as linear and circular temporality East and West
•Intercultural hermeneutics, cross-cultural philosophy, interspiritual philosophy, orientalism, postcolonialism and decolonization

Please send an Email with the subject line “Lisbon-Macau Philosophy Symposium” together with a 1-2 page proposal by May 31st to Paulo Borges (pauloaeborges@gmail.com), Carlos João Correia (carlosjoaocorreia@gmail.com), Filipa Afonso (fafonso@campus.ul.pt) and Mario Wenning (mwenning@um.edu.mo). Notification of acceptance will be given by June 30th.

The primary conference languages will be Portuguese and English. If desired, simultaneous translation from Chinese and Portuguese will be offered. The cost of transportation and accommodation will have to be arranged by each speaker.
